Please refer to my post:

for the exact situation.

Basically I tried to registed a domain. It was declined due to
some stupid security issue but is still under the company I registered it with.

How long will it take for records to show that domain is not owned by anyone??

This appears to be entirely up to the registrar. I've dropped domain names at eNom, and they appeared back in the pool in about two weeks, IIRC.

Network Solutions used to be about three months, but now they hold some domains for more than a year after the Expiration Date.

There are no rules when it comes to dropping expired domains.

Each registrar has their own practices, both for business and technical reasons.

One of the recent rumors is that if a domain has nameservers defined, and there are still other domains referencing these nameservers, NetSol won't drop that domain- ever...

I'm dying to have someone actually test this theory :).

I've been watching two expired domains. One was dropped by the nameservers and Netsol finally released it (and I got it :)). That took nine months.

The other domain has been expired even longer, but it's still resolving and hasn't been dropped.

The irony is--the domain that hasn't been dropped is for one of those domain selling companies that just picks up domains in the hope of selling them. Are they getting a free ride from Netsol?

I think there should be uniform rules on when a registrar drops a name.
