View Full Version : Rackshack to run out of bandwidth in 30 days?
BigWookie 05-22-2002, 01:04 PM Rackshack is using about 1.8GB of bandwidth at peak now, and their traffic is growing about 200 mbit a week. They have 3.2 Gbit total bandwidth. Should I be concerned they will run out of bandwidth or that if just one of their GigEs goes down my site will be unreachable?
cperciva 05-22-2002, 01:21 PM I commented some time back (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=320132#post320132) that Rackshack should upgrade their network sometime in late may or early june based on their rate of traffic growth; I seem to recall reading that they were in fact going to do exactly that. (I think it was on the RS forums, which have lost a month of recent posts.)
Can someone from rackshack tell me if I was hallucinating, or was there indeed such an announcement about another gb-E connection coming online soon?
BiGWill 05-22-2002, 02:34 PM afair they planned on getting a gig-e from Williams Communications ...
UmBillyCord 05-22-2002, 03:52 PM Last I heard, they installed mod_gzip on their core routers. This has cut bandwidth use in half!

Is it possible to install mod_gzip in a router? I thought it should be installed on each server individually.
Sainthax 05-22-2002, 04:43 PM  haha gzip
DanielP 05-22-2002, 04:44 PM Um.... mod_gzip is an apache server side based program.... I seriously doubt you can do that on a router..

Oppps... I meant mod_gzip(2) - squared. It is the new version.

LOL!
Hey can I get that installed on my home DSL router? I'd love to double my connection speeds. And really, why can't a router compress and decompress packets in real time anyways? :-)
Take care,
Brian
DanielP 05-22-2002, 05:01 PM When did they release a new version?
Got a website for it?
smartbackups 05-22-2002, 05:03 PM You mean you don't know where the website it at? We have it on all of our core routers and we have been able to disconnect our connections and just use ISDN now. ;)

zdwebhosting 05-22-2002, 05:13 PM ok fine i take it back.
/me slaps DanielP for not understanding
how is that :D :D
cperciva 05-22-2002, 05:54 PM Hey, you *could* do that with a transparent HTTP proxy. You'd probably get people really mad at you, but it would be entirely possible.
skylab 05-22-2002, 06:05 PM hmm. i distinctly remember a month or two ago, someone posting asking about a certain provider (i think time warner), and headsurfer replying negatively about the provider as, the provider has a signed contract with rackshack for a new gig-e (or something like that) and keep delaying the install date, even though the hardware is already in the rackshack NOC.
so, perhaps they're still delayed or negotiating elsewhere?
maybe they'll bring in a yipes pipe!!!!
zdwebhosting 05-22-2002, 06:39 PM why not a uunet :)
that would be sweet lol

That was XO ( http://www.xo.com )
and UUNET gigE
I would prefer a C&W gigE .. but imagen the cost
zdwebhosting 05-22-2002, 06:55 PM who is the most expensive company?
who is the best company ?

i wish there was an all about bandwidth site :)

Most expensive ?
Internap i guess
Level3 , C&W , UUNET , Verio and so on - All good
Level3 is a good worldwide provider ..
So is Qwest for me
There all good in there own way IMO
jayglate 05-22-2002, 07:06 PM UUnet, att, sprint are the most expensive.
then you have
internap, cw, genuity
then you have
qwest, level3, verio, time warner
Then you have
cogent, williams
jayglate 05-22-2002, 07:07 PM Cable and wireless backbone is the original UUNet backbone but the Feds made UUnet give it to CW because MCi/Worldcom was going to buy them. So they are both in my opinion equally as good. Genuity (formerly GTE, formerly BBN Planet) is the first backbone with AS #1.

not you .....
i quoted the person i was talking to
Edit ... oh that was you
OK
Well for one ...
UUNET are less expensive than C&W
Internap i am unsure of .. but the fact they use
UUNET , C&W and so on ... means they are more than likely more expensive that the rest
But you basically have it right .. except the bit about UUNET being in the top group
I believe
Savvis is also expensive
Broadwing is expensive also so i'm told
XO is cheap .. $4k for DS3 i believe ...
Now .. umm Time Warner is about 350k for a gigE
AT&T prices are quoted on their website
it was $200k for a OC12 i think
jayglate 05-22-2002, 07:17 PM you quoted me ..:)

utadmin 05-22-2002, 07:21 PM oh and
Expensive bandwidth !!
http://www.newnet.co.uk
Good one reason why i wanna move to the USA
jayglate 05-22-2002, 07:24 PM No, no uunet is about $60-$70 per meg more expensive than CW. Latest pricing, been shopping this for months now. and years in fact. UUnet has always been more expensive than CW.

utadmin 05-22-2002, 07:29 PM Sorry ..
i just looked at your sig
I was under the impression that C&W was expensive
How much is UUNET for a OC3 ( in New York ) compaired the C&W
If you have the current prices for bandwidth in New York could u pm me some for the following providers for DS3 or whatever you've got ..
UUNET
Qwest
Verio
But if your shopping around for bandwidth
IMO
Level3 , UUNET , Qwest , Verio , C&W
is the only way to go ..
Revelation 05-22-2002, 09:31 PM Although this isn't the price of major fiber, a 3 MBPS colo (their lowest amount) comes out to $2,700 bucks. And you're telling me cable and wireless is more expensive? ;)
From what i know: UUnet is by far the most expensive, followed by sprint, then the other major tier one ISPs.
Internap prices are lower than C&W or Genuity prices.
Savvis does not compare with the ISPs on list.

Not quite, the C&W backbone is the old MCI backbone pre-merger, UUNet was a part of Worldcom pre-merger, they wouldn't have been allowed to merge if they owned (at least at the time if memory serves me correctly) the two largest backbones in the US, and they wanted to keep UUNet, so they sold the old MCI backbone to C&W as part of the merger agreement.

My quote was much less than that :) In fact, you may actually get a half cabinet and 10 mbps of capped bandwith at that price with UUNet ... But that was a quote I got 2 months ago ...
cheers,
