I have a user that creates his entire site in Frontpage, and uses the publishing features. Recently he just did a complete rewrite of his site. It contains hundreds of pictures, and grew to over 400mb. When he tries to run a publish now, it won't complete. Mainly, I believe because he is on a 56k modem.

So he copied the whole web to a cd and sent it to me. I've uploaded it through ftp.

Is he going to have problems now with permissions when he tries to update some of those files?

How do I check that or change that?

Thanks

You should copy the whole web (from the web directory) and copy it 2 a CD.

What YOU have to do:
1) BUY frontpage :)
2) Open, FRONTPAGE WEB (not just the files)
3) publish...

This way your customer will be able to use the publish from home again.

I have frontpage and tried to do that.

I tried to import his web into my computer, but it crashes. The web is over 6,000 files.

What a big web...
but I think frontpage should be able that kind of sites too.

If you open frontpage,
OPEN
www.domainname.com

Does frontpage crash?

try to add or edit something,
all stable?

I can't get it to import into my computer, and he can't get it to finish.

So the files online now are old.

What is the best way to republish it?

There is a known issue with FP about the size and number of files that it can handle. It is better to break up the site into smaller subdomains/sites that are "individual".

ALso, there is another known issue when you FTP FP to a virtual site. After you FTP, you must go into the RaQ admin page, select the virtual site. Select any and all users for that site that have FP enabled. Disable FP for all those users. Then select Site Management. Disable FP extensions. Save. Then enable FP, input a new password/confirm password, and then save. Then return to the users for that site and re-enable FP.

If you do not do this, when the user(s) try to use FP, they will get a security error/FP Server extensions error.

Please note that this has worked for me. If after you follow these steps, then check the knowledge base on the Sub Cobalt site. There is at least one article available that will let you know what subdirectories will need to be deleted, such as _vti_private, and some other. However, I have not had to do this as the above steps has always worked. I am on a RaQ3i with RaQ4i software on it.

Some additional information concerning FP 2002 (just in case):

Can I use FrontPage 2002 extensions with my RaQ server?

Answer
FrontPage2002 is not compatible with FrontPage2000. The extension files for 2002 will not work with the extensions on the Cobalt server for 2000.

FrontPage2002 can be used to publish files to the server, but the newer features of FrontPage2002 will not function.

Installing FrontPage2002 extentions break functionallity with older versions. Users with FrontPage2000 or older would not be able to connect.

The company that actually wrote the UNIX port of FP only ported it to Apache 1.3.19 which is an older version then we use with known security holes. We will not backrev Apache & expose our users to that!

Please be aware that we know this is very high on our customers want list. When the FrontPage2002 port works without breaking then we will offer it.

There has been much discussion on the user list about this if you would like to check that out. Cobalt users-list and seaarch the archives for FP2002.
