I'm wanting to slowly inch my way into the hosting business. Ideally I'd like to offer mainly free hosting with ads on all users sites (like geocities, angelfire, tripod, etc) and then offer maybe 1-2 paid options to remove those ads.

I'd like for users (both free and paid) to be able to use their own domain name.

I've got a dedicated server to use for this.

What else do I need? Obviously the software to handle all of this is a major question. I'm running cPanel/WHM for the server control stuff.

If you wish to offer both free and paid webhosting ihostdev offer ipanel which create cpanel accounts, forces ads onto free accounts and creates paid accounts.

Hope that Helps

Sorry about the double post, although you will also require adverts for the website which could be done by google ads or standard banners and a website design. And if you wish to sell domains you will need a domain name reseller
