View Full Version : Server downtime credit...
WH Master 05-22-2002, 12:04 AM I was just wondering what dedicated hosts(and dedicated server customers) think is a reasonable credit for 24 days of straight downtime for dedicated servers?
This includes Many promises of being up the next morning/night within the first weeks, then a data center change, then being completely ignored for many days, and finally your servers coming back up.
I was offered a free month on only server leases. This does not include bandwidth which just about doubles the prices. So this turns out to be almost less than a 1:1 ratio of a day of downtime:day of credit.
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks
SoftWareRevue 05-22-2002, 12:16 AM I don't think there's anything someone could give me to compensate for "24 days of straight downtime."
I would have been gone a long time ago.

I heard that!! I've left hosts for sneezing in the same direction of my machine.
I would have cancelled after the first 48 hours of downage and flamed them here on this message board. :D
bacid 05-22-2002, 12:51 AM 24 days of downtime ()*!@(*)!@$(*
do you even have customers left???????????
bacid 05-22-2002, 12:52 AM btw. if i was you i would see what you can legally do in regards to suing this company for breach of contract.
WH Master 05-22-2002, 03:55 AM All data was on the servers, there was nothing we could do but wait for the data. We were pretty happy before this incident. You'd be suprised the % of customers we kept, but this would only be because of how happy they were before. Also, any bump can drop any customer at any time now, noone would/should be willing to "see" if something like this would happen again. We're currently still trying to figure out who is leaving etc...
Thanks.
WH Master 05-28-2002, 02:00 AM ^bump^
I would take my data and run to a new company as quickly as possible.
WH Master 05-28-2002, 04:37 AM We've moved our servers across the USA. This problem won't be happening again. What would you consider reasonable credit for this amount of downtime though?
hosting_ie 05-28-2002, 04:49 AM We give a days service credit for every HOUR of downtime to a limit of what you would m=normally pay in a month.
24 days of downtime, I'd be expecting at least two months of absolutely free hosting!!
Steve
jayjay 05-28-2002, 04:50 AM No bill for that month.
Then I'd get the hell out of there
seg fault 05-28-2002, 09:58 AM If I had a customer off the air for that long - they would be in a perfect position to shoot me down no matter what I said.
I would give the customer 6 months free and get them to sign a non-disclosure regarding it :D
Downtime like that is outragous - if they really want you onboard, they will show it. I cannot think of any scenario which would cause somebody 24 days downtime.
As a matter of interest, what was the cause of the downtime?

I'd expect no less then what they offered. People here boast "i'd expect 2+ months of free hosting", give me a break. What kind of uptime guarantee were you offered, and what type of compensation was offered in the contract or sla/tos/aup for such downtime, because i wouldn't expect much more then that.
Rochen 05-28-2002, 01:22 PM The compensation all depends on what kind of SLA you had with the company. I mean if they promise 99.9% uptime they should give you all the money back for that month or whatever the SLA says.

In any normal circumstance, I would only expect what was offered. However, this situation is extreme. If a provider dropped my sites for 24 days, they would have to promise me the world, and give it to me, or I'd leave them in a second. If this happened to me right now, I would seriously have to be given at least 6 months free in order to stay with the company.
WHMaster - tell me, why do you want to stay with this provider? You should have been long gone about 22 days ago.
Just running some numbers here... If this provider keeps your site up for 1 year straight after this incident, the uptime will only be 93.4 % for the year. If they keep your site up for 5 years without any downtime, this will still only be 98.6% uptime over the 5 years.
I would drop these people at once. Can you afford for this to happen again? There is absolutely no reason at all that you should be down for 24 days.
seg fault 05-28-2002, 02:01 PM mpope is right, seriously porcupine - 24 days is a long time - think about it for a few mins
clocker1996 05-28-2002, 02:11 PM has your server gone back up wh master?
