umm, i'm not real atune to this board yet and don't know everything there is to know, reading around it seems like most of you know a lot more than i do. That just means i can actually learn something here. Anyway i was wondering if you were to host a website off your computer, what kind of software would you use. I know of someone who flamed Microsofts IIS, and i'm on 2000 so i concidered that, but i know there is some software that has Apache, MySQL, Perl, PHP..and uhh....some other stuff for you to use to set up your own home based website. it would be a lot easier for me because my current webserver is giving me crap about their database they provided....anyway, any help is appreciated, thanks. peace

Before you try to do this, bear mind mind you'll have to keep your computer running 24/7 -- might be quite expensive due to the extra power needed. Also, an UPS would be in order to keep your server running even when there is a power failure.
And lastly, read your providers terms of use policy to make sure you are allowed to run servers on their network, as I've seen some cable or ADSL providers not allow that.
Good luck! :)
Make sure you can get a statip or a "fake" static ip of sorts (dyndns.org comes to mind) and make sure you have another computer you can experiment and use day to day.
