View Full Version : Domain Registration Questions
jdesvin 05-01-2006, 05:03 PM I'm trying to understand the larger picture of how the whole domain name system works. For example, if I register a domain with GoDaddy.com, from what I understand they will provide some type of configuration menu which I can change at any time to specify the name servers for my domain? Does this mean anytime someone types mydomain.com into their web brower, goDaddy.com is contacted to determine what the name server address is? Or do these changes just propagate from goDaddy whenever a change is made allowing them to be cached on numerous DNS servers?
Has anyone used Yahoo for domain registration? I see they are offering registration for $2.99 "for the first year". Does this mean I can't register the domain and then transfer it to a different registrar? I want to have the domain registered in my name so I retain full control.
Finally, anyone aware of a domain registrar (that will register the domain in my name) which accepts PayPal?
Thanks!
Jon
tnndotnet 05-01-2006, 05:13 PM GoDaddy accepts PayPal.
They offer a menu too... you can change DNS server addresses and that from there, and then it takes 24-48 hours for it to propagate. Now, the changes are made pretty directly, but ISPs have to update their DNS servers in order for people to see the new location.
Yahoo for domains couldnt be a bad thing, never tried, and never will.
And after your domain propagates, it never goes thru GoDaddy. Your ISPs DNS server declares what IP mydomain.com will go to.

sandrodz 05-01-2006, 05:14 PM yahoo is crap, never ever use them :)
tnndotnet 05-01-2006, 05:20 PM Also wanted to add, be cautious about godaddy's PayPal. I do not like it one bit, it makes you enter an agreement with them which allows them to take funds when they request it. Meaning if there is some kind of mystery charge, they can draw whatever amount. I would contact them for more information, and a possible contract in case they decide to withdraw funds that you dont want withdrawn. But paying by CC is fine =D
jdesvin 05-01-2006, 05:24 PM Thanks for your fast comments on Yahoo and Paypal w/ GoDaddy :)

jdesvin 05-01-2006, 05:28 PM One other question...GoDaddy lists several options for registering a domain... 1 year, 2 years, etc. If I only register for 1 year, I will have the option to renew my registration later without losing the domain, right? The only real benefit to subscribing for multiple years at the start is for a price savings?
gobeyond 05-01-2006, 07:48 PM Godaddy.com will notify you 90 days, 60 days and 30 days before your domain name expires. So, you have plenty of time to renew it. I agree that Yahoo's domain service is no good. They serve as the middle man for Melbourn IT in Australia. I used to have a couple of domains registered through Yahoo. Glad I got them transferred to Godaddy.
tnndotnet 05-01-2006, 08:27 PM Ohhhh yea...
My boss DID register one thru Yahoo domains just to see, he was locked out of his account for days for no reason, I have no idea if the problem was ever resolved, but it is a domain he doesnt care about, we use netsol to register all the domains, expensive, but... it is the most stable domain registrar on this planet... Also the slowest login authenticating!

Mitac 05-01-2006, 09:12 PM Godaddy is good for domain registration and that is about it. I would get your domain, select a good host and go with that. I do not reccomend using godaddy for hosting, I have had too many bad experiences with them. Read other posts on here about how horrible their support is.
Just my two cents :peace:
