2checkouts linkpt is the service they use to validiate cc numbers, so since the host was using 2checkout and 2checkout had problems at that moment with their linkpt you recieved the mentioned error.

But they have stored your info. and will contact you as soon as they solve the issue.

We had the same problem this morning when we attmepted to check the validity of credit cards.

Turns out the payment went through and I got my money

This happened to us also with 2 sign-ups but we never got our money.. Do you know if your customers had to answer and email of some sorts or did it just show up?

I use linkpoint directly and had no problems processing this week. They do take the gateway down every now and then though.
