View Full Version : RackShack average upload speed?

Hy,

As you may have read in a previous threat,
I'm going to take a RackShack server.

But a question to rackshack server admins:

What is the average upload speed?

I really would like to get reaction of admins who have multiple server by rackshack to know for sure it's all about being lucky or it all are perfect load balanced connections...

I don't have server there, but I can tell you that upload speed depends on how fast connection speed is in the place from which you're uploading. If you have 9.600k modem, then you can't hope that you'll be upload with 5 mbps speed :D

Nope,

But I think the creepy nuts people here have run enough tests allready using simultanious downloads,...

Perhaps another reaction..?

do a search, rackshack servers seem to be like snowflakes from what i read around here. No two servers are ever the same. Some people rant how great rackshack servers are, some get stuck on lemons, so regardless of what people tell you, your upload speed might be great, might be pathetic, you'll have to take your chances (if you read the threads on the p4's). Just remember, if you get a lemon, chances are (from what i've heard previously), unless you can get into arms reach of a rackshack tech, you're gonna be SOL.

I think that all new servers are put on 10mbit ports with quite a few other people (around 25) don't quote me on that though. You might find yourself lucking with a 100mbit port. I get around 200k download speeds from my PC.

200KB/sec...
Sounds very little to me :s

... How do you get 25 people on a port?

He means 10 Mbit HUB/switch -> 10Mb shared bandwidth for 25 users

Ack,

No professional company that i could ever think of would put people on a hub, everyone uses switches. Every company i can think of uses 100mbps switches or more, being put on a hub would be an absolute nightmare, and i think rackshack is a little more professional then that.

sorry to say but thier newest servers have 10mbit ports

so you can only burst 10mb/s so if you have a hot file not great.

i have a server thats 1ghz duron 512 ram i got back in november with them thats on 100mbit port

From my RackShack MRTG graph page:

Description: FastEthernet20

ifType: ethernetCsmacd (6)
ifName:
Max Speed: 1250.0 kBytes/s

not really trying to stick up for rackshack, but neither of those proove a thing :)

Question: If from a shell account elsehwere I can get 515.74 KB/s from my RackShack server, does that mean if two people were doing this they would each get 500 KB/s or if there were two people doing it at the same time the would each get 250 KB/s? Just curious what creates this ~500 KB/s ceiling and how the number of connections might affect it.

If the port speed is 10 mbps, what limits my upload to ~500 Kbps?

You think they just made a typo on their MRTG graphs under the members section?

Just to set the record straight...All of our servers are connected via a 100 Mb switch port to our network, with the exception of the 10Mb Unmetered Transfer Servers.

If the mrtg graph you are looking at shows a max speed of 1250 KBytes please pm me the ip address of your server so that I can have it corrected for you.

Jeff

lol im such an idiot. i got a p4 from rackshack and a duron. the duron reads the port speed as Max Speed: 12.5 MBytes/s and the p4 as Max Speed: 1250.0 kBytes/s , i spotted the p4 speed and went into chat and asked patrick, long convo later, patrick says its just a different way of writing 100mbps, me being to tired to do the maths i did about 30 seconds ago lol i accepted it. anyways my p4 is at 10 mbps. ill pm you the ip. good job it isnt in use lol

Hi Jeff-ev1,

You have a PM from me.

I am now running my primary sites on my P4 server and am very happy with it. But my bandwidth graph shows 1250 kBytes/s which is 10 mbps. If you can switch it to a 100 mbps port I would really appreciate it.

Thanks very much,

Jeff.

lol methinks jeff will have a lot of pms. sounds like a few switched have defaulted to 10 or were never set to 100. there was me thinking i was a fool for getting it wrong and all along i was right. lol patrick you daft bugger :) i expect an apology ;) or an extra half gig of ram gratis.

:D richy

If they can set it at 100 instead of 10 I will be very appreciative, that's for sure.

did anyone get that matter fixed by rackshack or by jeff-ev1??

did they switch your server from 1250kb/s to 12.5Mb/s??

panopticon

They said it was an error in the MRTG program config file and that they were on 100 MBPS ports all along. Now the MRTG graphs shows:

Max Speed: 12.5 MBytes/s

Max upload speed from my server to a shell account elsewhere is around 500 KBytes per second right now.

max outbound i've done is 35.1 Mb/s

that was for almost 24hrs straight..

eemarket

I did some downloading tests with my 2 rackshack servers and I got 8MB/s so it just can't be 10mbit/s connection even though mrtg says the max speed is only 1250kb/s

I guess it is manual error :)

I put 127MB file on one server and downloaded from the so called 1250kb/s(max speed) and it took about 20 seconds to download that file.

figure 10mbit/s = 1250KB/s = 1.25MB/s

then for 127MB it would take around 127 seconds.
but for 12.5MB/s it would take around 10 seconds.

and I got about 22 seconds to download the file.

So it is 100Mbit/s and it is MRTG error :)
