I signed up today and my account was instantly activated. I put in a ticket and got my answer about my DB connection within the hour.

Now I am happily getting my site ready to launch.

Way awesome!

Good to see you've had a positive experience with your host. This is good for the industry in general. Good luck with your site. :)

Sman,

It would be better if you could post your feedback after some more experience with them for example 1 or 2 months later.

People come here and read feedbacks and decide on what they read. so it is better to give feedbacks when you are sure about your feedback.

Mac

I agree on the fact that a newbie cannot really evaluate a host right away. I will say I was impressed with the easy/instant signup process they provide. I have been with gearhost for two months now. I just recently have hooked up my mySQL database and PHP and it has been running very smoothly. FTP access is very fast also compared to another host I use. The fact you get your own IP address is great also.

I think what people dont realize is that auto signup scripts to hosts = fraud orders, or stleast they did to us when we had the suto signup on our raq so we dropped that quick. Once the goons get ahold of your site and know you have autosignup well then all the goons show up.. I would rather just have someone to setup account's 24/7 and always have them done within 1/2 hour.

Glad to see that you have found a provider you are happy with, share your experience with a couple of months of service under your belt to give an accurate picture of service.

I myself am signed up with GearHost and have been since January. I have several accounts with them and I am extremely satisfied. I tend to stay away from praising hosts too much because my luck tends to lean towards the host going flat after I praise them. Regarding GearHost, I am completely satisfied. Their support is excellent with responses to support issues received within hours at max. Sometimes much sooner than that. Even simple inquiries are answered in a very timely manner.

As it stands right now, I have no reason to think of moving elsewhere and I feel that my choice won't change any time soon.

The support is good when hosting company is new... wait for couple of months, then tell again your experience. :D

Umm, I've been with them since January and that is five months. Based on your request and the request of others, I've done just that. Of course this isn't a year or longer but for what has been asked, the information is all here. :)

One thing you forget OKIHost is that software, when programmed right can do anything human intervetion, regarding signups, can do much faster, effecient and reliable than anything else. Our iControl software, programmed and built by us, allows us to signup accounts using AVS, CVV2, and IP local dedection. Given those points, which I'm sure you didn't realize, makes our system even more effecient than doing it manually. Your always going to have fraud but then again if that fruad user has all info on the CC holder then, nothing other than an IP spoof will really make you detect a fraud, so it's a "business-expense". When you receive just over a hundred signups a day this type automation is the best way, when it comes down to it.

I've been with Gearhost since about February and I've been quite pleased. Some of the recent threads about Gearhost issues gave me some concern, but I've never had a problem with them. Presales questions were problematic back in February, but tech support issues have been handled well since then.

Someone else asked to see the person's website, one assumes to verify their veracity. I run two database driven sites:

http://www.austinexplorer.com/
http://www.texashiking.com/

Every single tech support question was answered in a timely manner via their ticket system, sometimes within an hour. Why multiple tech support questions you ask? Were there problems? A couple, but mostly I had questions about advanced features and components that most folks probably don't care about.

Your mileage may vary. I hope that I have set into motion some sort of jinx by posting this positive review!

I was looking at Gearhost a while back. One thing I was curious about was their phone support. Has anyone ever tried it? Is it just a voice mail support line? (Just curious.)

(I apologize if this is alittle off topic, but support is an important consideration of mine when choosing a host.)

Thanks,

- Jason.

I've called their toll-free number previously and every time I have, the phone has been answered within three rings. They request that you submit a support ticket first and then call if there is no response after 24-hours. I've never had to call to check on a support ticket and as has been stated above, they are quick in their responses from their ticket system. Plus, a couple of times I've called for support issues instead of submitting the support ticket and they were still as helpful.

I did a lot of research before signing up with gearhost. There were five areas that appealed to me the most about them.

1) They had a physical phone number I could reach them at unlike other hosts I see online. I have yet to have a reason to even call them up.
2) They have physical servers they personally work with instead of reselling a service from India.
3) Their introductory price was too good to miss (not that I knew it was gonna increase though).
4) I get to play around with ASP/Cold Fusion in addition to having PHP/mySQL (which is basic on any account nowdays) Without IIS or Allaire software ($$$) there are hard to play around with.
5) Fair bandwidth allotment.

I just came back from vacation, thanks for all of the great replies and information on what to look for. I will post again in about 2 months to let everyone know how it's going. Still working on some graphics and layout but should be ready soon.

A few words to explain Gearhost from someone that was hosted with them:

Horrible Support
Too good to be true features
Crooked

I cancelled my account, no refund AND I was billed subsequently after I had cancelled my account. I called their toll-free number and was forwarded to Ryan Kekos' voicemail everytime. I never got a reply back from them. This is not the first time it happened, and certainly not the last with Gearhost. Ryan's reputation precedes him:

http://webforums.macromedia.com/coldfusion/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=242196&highlight_key=y&keyword1=gearhost

I advise anyone looking for hosting, DO NOT CHOOSE GEARHOST.

This is old news. Companies can change and these problems could have very easily been corrected since their startup phase where most of these problems were initially reported. I, myself, haven't had the problems that others have mentioned. That doesn't mean the host is the best in the industry but for me, they have been. I have no complaints and continue to signup new accounts frequently. One new account will be signed up within the next few days as well.

But again, that is my experiences with GearHost and I can only speak for myself. Good luck with whomever else you have choosen since leaving.
