View Full Version : Do 100 POP3 Email Accounts saturate 50 MB of disk space?

To expand on the main question of this thread -

Suppose I offer my clients a 50 MB plan with 1 GB Bandwidth per month. If I simultaneously offer 100 POP3 Email Accounts along with this plan, what would happen in the following scenario?

Suppose hypothetically the client actually creates 100 POP3 Email Accounts for his business firm. Also suppose hypothetically NONE OF THESE 100 POP3 EMAIL ACCOUNTS have yet begun to be used.

My question is: Does the simple process of creating so many new POP3 Email Accounts consume a percentage of hard disk space within the plans allocated space (50 MB in this case.)

If yes, how much hard disk space does the creation of a single brand new and yet to be used POP3 Email Account actually consume?

i'm only guessing but it would really have to depend on what type of control panel you are using and whether or not it includes emails as disk space usage.

am using WHM/CPanel at the moment.

Just creating 100 e-mail accounts is hardly going to consume any disk space at all, definitely less than half a megabyte, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Having 100 POP accounts set-up for an account isn't going to use that much space - but you will run into problems if 100 people start storing their mail on the server. We have some customers who leave their mail on the server becuase they only use our web sytem and don't download their mail to an email client. Before you know it they are maxing their disk space.

You should always make customers aware that while they have 100 POP accounts available to them, their ability to use these accounts might be limited to the amount of available disk space they have.

I have a client which uses 27mb where their staff(20 email accounts uses WebMail to access their mails on the server) Their web site uses only 7mb.

Their account is 100mb/2gb there's nothing that can be done if they don't delete/remove/download unwanted files such as quotations, attachments, catalogs images, etc. and you can't force them to as they are within their limits and still growing every month.

Hehe, probably when they hit the 100mb limit, then I will explained to them the reason of the high diskspace usage and ask them to upgrade to a higher plan...I won't be supprised if they will start deleting/removing the unwanted files to conserve diskspace.

i've had close to 100 accounts and it doesn't really use that much space, especially if the mail is downloaded.

but if you get a lot of attachments and people only use webmail (where it doesn't get taken off the server), then space does start to go fast.

Thanks for your input guys.

But what confuses me is that while some hosts state that email storane space and email bandwidth usage in included within their plans total space and bandwidth allocation, some hosts also clearly state that email storage & bandwidth is not included!

How do they manage this? Do they have another email server dedicated for only email accounts? But since these hosts offer unlimited POP3 email accounts too, wouldn't they run out of space if some client who was a big company decided to give each of its 1000 employees a 50 MB POP email account?

unlimited anything is marketing hype unless it clearly defines in the allocated space.

We used to offer unlimited email accounts and still do on our reseller plans but we also state that it is unlimited number as long as it will fit within the defined limts of their allocated space.

Even with that I sometimes wonder if I am making false statements.

If you say unlimited email accounts you better be prepared for that one guy that is going to come along and offer a Hotmail type service to anyone that wants one. You can imagine the server load once 10,000 people start checking their emails. Bet they would stop the unlimited then.

just tested it in q-mail

389 k of drive space used ( or atleast that is what I think was used )

but here is fair warning:
every account get's spam, each spam is about 4K big, each account get's about 10K worth of spam a day,

moral of the story is get yourself a spam filter
