Check the following article about how to build a dual Athlon MP 2000+ on a CiDesign 2U rack case. They used a MSI motherboard based on 760MPX. The performance is about 25% higher than the one of a single AMD and you can use 64 bit / 66Mhz adapters.

We once made a dual PIII with a special (expensive) Tyan mother board that could fit in ONE (!) U .... that was something ;)

Dual Pentium III CPU's in 1U case?????
What frequency?

Never had any heat problems?

Actually is quite easy to integrate a dual Pentium III in a 1U case. It's possible to do the same thing with an AMD, but I do not recommend it. Too much heat, limited expansion space.

I just don't understand why the empty 19" 1u chassis are so expensive...?

Are expensive because are high quality and are targeted to a small target which has money.
