View Full Version : Ping some hosts for me // Ping speeds?
niles! 05-19-2002, 11:26 AM Hi,
I have a question for the people that live in the US,
can somebody 'ping' the next hosts for me and give me the results please (and your exact location):
If I ping them I get this results (in Belgium with a cable connection):
- www.easyhosting.nl : 20, 20, 170, 80
- www.kpn.be : 20, 20, 110, 30
- www.hostrocket.com : 321, 100, 100, 160
- www.cyberpixels.com : 281, 200, 281, 200
I know that kpn.be (maybe easyhosting.nl) should be the best host for me or the visitors in Belgium but it's a expensive host, and hostrocket / cyberpixels are cheap hosts with a good reputation but is the speed good enough for me or are the too slow for using in Belgium (or Europe)?
And another question, what are good ping results? Are only the hosts with a ping under 100 good or is 200 still a good result?
Or is it something like: 0-50: very fast ; 50-100: fast ; 100-150: normal ; 150-higher: slow...?
Thx in advance,
niles!
avara 05-19-2002, 12:00 PM Unless you want to host a game server, the pings are not really very important. What's more important in terms of web site hosting is the actual download speed you get from the server.
niles! 05-19-2002, 12:05 PM It's not for a game-server but I thougth (heard) a low ping was always good for the speed of site.
And is the download speed from a American host for me in Belgium much lower or is there almost no diffrence?
Can you also give me advise, is a server in your country always the best choise or ...?
Greetz,
niles!

LOL. These ping results are very similar, I would take either HostRocket or CyberPixels.
niles! 05-19-2002, 02:03 PM Now I'm almost sure that I gonna choose for Hostrocket, this because they have a good reputation, no high prices, fast, ...
Thx for your ping results ;)

Cephren 05-19-2002, 02:20 PM The best place to ping is from the ATT Route Server (CERFnet)
at:
telnet://route-server.cerf.net
jkruss 05-19-2002, 09:44 PM Download speeds are much more important than ping results.
If you want to know how fast a host is, NetMechanic provides a free service that will download a notional 10K file over 8 hours or so then email you the results.
Find out a website hosted by the web host and test that (some hosts put their own site on a dedicated server, so better to test for one of the host's clients).
The results give you a comparisson with average speeds and percentile results.
Example results:

Does anyone know any other good speed check sites that do not just do pings?
Cheers,
James Kruss.
netacore 05-19-2002, 10:28 PM niles!,
You can do network tests from various servers at:
http://network-tools.com
ToastyX 05-20-2002, 03:20 AM Just had to add that ping results are not indicative of speed and that the results that you get won't be the same results that other people will get.
