DNS is a service that provides a translation of your domain name to the IP address on which your site is located (host). This information must be "sent" throughout the world so that when someone calls up your site by name, they get the proper address. This process takes some time and can vary from 24 hours (rarely less) to up to 72 hours (rarely more). This isn't your host's fault, but rather an attribute of the web mechanism.

Not to pick nits (those are the eggs of head lice in your hair and a terrible slang expression!), nut DNS information is not sent around the Internet, it's pulled.
DNS servers cache data according to TTL or Time To Live rules. When these caches time out, queries to a DNS cache will fail, and the authoritative root for that server will be used to fetch the correct data.
When you updated your data for the domain it was written to the TLD Zone file. This is the top level of the DNS "tree" so to speak. Now people can see your domain if they have never been there before, but if they have visited before, the DNS cache at their ISP may still contain your old information.
This "pull" of your new information around the Internet is called propagation. In poorly configured DNS caches it can take several weeks for your information to update, but most of the world will be using your inforamation in 48 hours.

I have to admit that I started out the post with good intentions - and then a lazy streak hit me and it all went downhill from there. Anyhow, you explained it pretty nicely.
