Does anyone know of a service that will alert me when my server goes down? I'm not talking about email alert, I need pager notifications. Thanks!

You can use those email2pager gateways.

Is it something that runs on the server? If so, how does it work if the server itself crashed? Anyway, can you point me to a site that has the information? Thanks!

Almost every paging/mobile phone company has a email->pager/sms gateway. So you can receive email notifications to your pager.

Or take a look at http://internetseer.com .

From their site:
Where free alerts and recoveries are sent ... to your email, phone or pager, including SMS (available through your cell phone service)

you can run your own network monitoring software, from www.bb4.com or www.netsaint.org ... :) And use e-mail to SMS gateway as people previously posted ;)

Alerta seem great, very configurable.

We have been on there month free trial for about 3 weeks now and will definatley continue.

They do provide reports, only problem is you have to pay extra for each SMS message.
