Hey gang, I am the newbie to owning my own server and want to put only my own sites on a dedicated machine. What do people think of these two packages?

WEBRESELLER:
IBM PLESK | 299.00 Setup / 149.95 Per Month
Total Available: 9
order now
IBM PLESK
IBM X-SERIES 300 SERVER
Pentium III 1.13
Unlimited Domain Plesk 2.5
60 GIG AND 20.4 GIG HD (20 GIG FOR BACKUP)
512 MB
450 GIG TRANSFER
The only thing is I have not figured out what software this machine is running. Is it RedHat Linux? That 450 gig of transfer should would be nice.

RACKSHACK:
Hardware Services
650 Mhz Processor
256MB RAM
20GB EIDE Drive
30GB (30GB incld.) Burstable Bandwidth
24x7 Support
RedHat Linux 7.1 Preinstalled
RackWatch Basic
Monthly $195.00

Thanks,
Bradley

webreseller. It's running RedHat with a PLESK control panel. I'd suggest you to go with webreseller.

There we go, rackshack mixing up with rackspace again ;)

I've not heard of any reliability problems with Webreseller, but I know that Rackspace doesn't have any... and they have a long, proven track record.

bradley,

What are your website addresses? That may help determine what you need. I mean if you don't have much traffic you don't need 400 gigs of transfer.

I did confuse R and R. I am talking about Rackspace versus WebReseller. I mislabeled when I listed the details.

The problem is one of my web sites already has 30 gig of traffic per month. So almost immediately if I go with Rackspace I will have to be buying more bandwidth.

Webreseller's web site is somewhat confusing though. I don't see what the software is on the deals with the 450 gigabyte transfer. I guess I am wondering what the catch is with Webreseller that they can offer more than ten times the bandwidth that rackspace can.

Can anyone explain?

Bradley

Rackspace have a solid network, they had 100% network uptime during the past 12 months and still no downtime as far as I know... so what you pay for is their redundancy. But with WebReseller.net, they don't have the same number of lines as Rackspace and so can not give the 100% uptime. It all comes at a price though of course.

Well, going with Rackspace of course would be the best choice if you can afford the pricing (especially for the extra bandwidth) as you should spend less time to learn about managing the server. Rackspace offers managed servers and they should be able to help you all the way.

But if you want a decent server with good pricing and lots of bandwidth, Webreseller is the way to go. I have a P4 server with Plesk there and the netowrk speed and uptime have been great. However, since they offer a semi-managed solution, you may need to learn a bit about server management which I think is well worth the time and money you will be saving later :)
