In theory, you can place as much virtual sites on one IP...

The only disadvantages you'll see are:
- Just one same "username" (e.g. for e-mail, ftp) can be used per IP
E.g.
www.domain1.com: John Jeff Steve
www.domain2.com: Robert Ria but not Steve (same IP)

- Just one reverse DNS record can be configured: IP -> site
- Just one site can use SSL (through GUI)

I know people using a RaQ3 with 240 Virtual Sites on 1 IP

Tiny correction:
On a RaQ, this would be per server, not per IP. Has nothing to do with IPs.

I just rode that in the RaQ4 manual...

In theory, the RaQ can handle about 200 domains per IP (cpu switching I believe). This is done via a protocol called Name Based Virtual Hosts. When the URL is read by Apache, it simply sends the correct pages to the user.

The only downfall with name based virtual hosts is that you can only enable one site with SSL. This is because SSL requests the IP of the site, not the name.
