Is it safe to put the customer's login form on the main page, or is better to put it in a non-public area?

Depends how safe the form is, or how the script it sends details to work.

But if you want maximum security you could put it in a members area secured by .htaccess & ssl.

I'd suggest not on the frontpage, just to be more secure
