I happend to read a classified ad of webhosting company in leading news paper in India.

They were offering web-hosting in exchange of old stuffs - can u believe that? check www.junk2web.com The parent company Space2let.com has offered this to local people. Its India's number 3 company.

I feel its very cheap to comeout with such kind of offers? what do you think - I do agree anything which fetches business is good but again NOT EVERYTHING IS GOOD which can bring business

Sounds like a pain becauase now in addition to keeping servers secured and backed up, you are dealing with ebaying a bunch of stuff to get cash to pay for bandwidth and hardware.

Has nothing to do with ebaying anything. They know how much they can sell those items to recyclers for and are simply acting as the middle man. They probably make more money doing it this way than simply selling hosting.

Pretty smart idea if you ask me. (Just so they don't get any script kiddies, or other abusers cashing in cans.)

Paper 25 Rs/Kg is a lot if you see the general price is 3-6Rs/Kg. Also, see the * mark. Ask them what are "TERMS AND CONDITIONS APPLY" ?

Also, try to verify their "ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND" Site hosting claim !!

I will however, stay away from them :)

Well if you had the money backing you a nationwide commerical would probably suit you just fine :D ...thats a joke heh. As far as offering webhosting for junk, what are you getting out of it? Nothing but old junk that people don't want. Your best bet is just to exchange services. Perhaps with a media company.

bad idea first you need to collect that old stuff and then sell it again too much work in my opinion

And to think, in the UK you have to pay people to take away your junk :).

The hosting industry no longer shocks me no matter what happens, I've seen a lot of crazy things happen so the shock factor isn't as big of a deal as it was way back when.

It is most definitely a unique marketing tactic. It is very possible that thier true target was the money they would get from the paper, and metal goods, rather than the amount of storage they give. I thought it was interesting to read this. Thanks for the information :D

One of the most successful businesses in our town currently (this is the U.S.) is a resale shop. That's right -- selling peoples' old stuff. But, they are particular about what they take, they won't take anything broken/junk/dirty/gross. No clothing. It has to be in certain categories and have a minimum value.

I'm not sure how exactly this would play out in practical terms... but I wouldn't throw the idea away at first glance. There's clearly some mapping out that would need to be done on it, but so long as Resale Shops work (and they do, let there be no question) I'd say the idea is viable.

It cant be number 3 hosting company. I am sure it cannot be bigger or better than Sify.com or vsnl.com or net4.in with respect to sales, infrastruture and organisational capability [by the way the first two have their own data centers located in India and even by international standards its very large.]

If indeed they were number 3 they would have better business to mind than collecting trash in exchange for hosting.
