I am tediously comparing managed hosting plans. Here I am asking you all about Dialtone versus Rackspace.

DIALTONE:
Linux 201:
Brand IBM xSeries
CPU 1 GHz Pentium III (max 1 CPU)
Memory 512 MB 133MHz SDRAM ECC (max 1.5 GB)
Storage 20.4 GB 7.2K ATA 100 IDE (max 180 GB)
Mirror N/A
Network Single Ethernet
IPs Free
OS DI Linux 7.2 (RedHat 7.2 based)
Services Web, FTP, DNS, Mail and more
Traffic 30 GB Burstable
Features and Benefits
Installed Software
System Management
Pay monthly $149 with $200 setup fee
Pay annually $1,599 with no setup fee Save $389
They gave me a demo of their server management control panel and it seemed pretty easy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
RACKSPACE:
650 Mhz Processor
256MB RAM
20GB EIDE Drive
30GB (30GB incld.) Burstable Bandwidth
24x7 Support
RedHat Linux 7.1 Preinstalled
RackWatch Basic
Monthly $195.00
I am not clear on the control panel for Rackspace. Can anyone tell me how it is?
--------------------
I am a newbie at getting a server. Anybody know how these two compare? I do not really know what all of the above means yet, but both are in my price range. Any advice?
Thanks,
Bradley

For starters is the 1 gigahertz CPU a lot better than the 650 CPU?

1 month ago I would have said Dialtone. But since their acquisition by Interland, I would recommend RackSpace now.

However, you should check out this (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49892) thread - Pegasus are top notch and that is a lot of hardware for your money.

The Dialtone machine, hardware-wise, is definitely superior with twice the amount of memory and a much faster processor.

Rackspace usually installs webmin on their servers. You can check it out at http://www.webmin.com/ It does help to have some command line experience before using webmin--I find webmin to be very useful.

If you think you can catch onto basic server admin tasks and won't need much support, the Dialtone offer will probably save you money in the long run.

Dialtone gives great connectivity, fast support and instant setup ... not to forget the unlimited IP addresses ;)

After its merger, DI is now part of the worlds largest dedicated-hosting company for SME and I think their act is going well.

once you sign up, you wouldn't want to leave it. i've been tempted often by the rackshack deals, but something tells me to stick with dialtone.

bradley,

You get double the memory for free with Rackspace if you sign a 1 year contract. Plus Rackspace gives you a discount on a 6 month or 12 month contract which you pay by the month.

After the Dialtone aquisition by Interland, I'd suggest you to go with Rackspace. Try to contact them first, maybe you can get a better deal, e.g. get the CPU upgraded to 1 Ghz for free :)

Im grabbing a server from rackspace.net for some off network dns redundancy. Ill let you know how they go although ive never heard one single thing bad about them. I cant think of anyone better, if anyone knows of anyone even better then rackspace let me know, moneys not really a issue, but it cant be a competitor of mine, has to have superior uptime IE 100%, superior backbone, superior hardware, superior staff, etc etc....

There's a datacenter outside of Phoenix that I heard costs tens of thousands to get hosted. Yahoo! has some of their servers there and so does several other larger then life companies. I heard it's where ya go when you're bigger then big. I want to say it's called Exodus, but I looked it up on the net and couldn't find them in Phoenix. Anyone know who I'm talking about and some of their other accounts?

just as a side note, Exodus was bought by C&W so maybe it was renamed or sth. ?
