Hey guys!

I haven't posted in a long while, because I have been busy like mad. But, I found this article on Mike Industries today about how when ESPN migrated to a CSS-based design, they saved 730 TERABYTES (yes, TB) a year!

I found this interesting because about a year ago, I believe.. I came onto this forum and created a case study of a Photobucket concept I did, where they saved tens (if not hundreds) of terabytes of bandwidth a month by switching to a CSS-based design. No one believed me, and they definitely didn't believe the cost saving benefits of CSS-based designs.

This is a real problem for larger companies with large amount of visitors. Anyone have this problem with their sites, or agree/disagree? Feedback would be great!

You'll get no arguments from me on the issue.

I did a proof-of-concept for a corporate intranet, which involved reducing average page markup from 27 kb. to around 4 kb., using proper CSS and semantically correct XHTML markup.

I wrote out a redux of this in DigitalPoint thread, showing a $960,000/yr. savings, just in terms of employees using the intranet, not even talking about the public corporate site!

Check it out if you'd like. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=683716#post683716 - this will probably look fairly familiar to you, the methodology anyway.

Another interesting article is at ALA. Back before Slashdot switched to CSS, they did a review of how much they would save by switching to CSS, and it came up to $4,000/yr at a minimum.
