View Full Version : ICANN accredited registrar going belly up precedent

Hi all

Does anyone know if there has ever been any ICANN accredited registrars going bankrupt, leaving domain name registrants unable to update their admin/DNS records or transfer their domains?

The reason for raising this matter is that, with competition becoming cut-throat and margins collapsing, the financial well-being of some registrars may become an issue of concern.

Thanks.

I' ve been looking into this one myself and so far have found no one who has actually gone out of business and left their users stranded.

The value of the domain "properties" of an active registrar would more than likely result in their being purchased as part of any closing of a business - in order to generate revenue to put off debtors. This would be ordered by any US bankruptcy courts - and I assume the courts in other countries would act in a similar manner.

Actually any domain registrar that goes out of business, the domains revert to ownership by verisign/network solutions

yep.

registrars.com went belly. Can't remember if they were ICANN accredited though.

I'm not too sure whether VeriSign bought them out or simply took over.

:uzi: VeriSign :puke:

What I do know though is that to transfer 50'000 domains over to another registry only costs you $1 a piece.

They will fall back onto another ICANN company.

This is from GoDaddy:
Go Daddy is ICANN accredited. If Go Daddy were to go out of business the domain names would be assigned to another accredited registrar. There would be no changes on the ownership of the domain name.

No change on ownership.

What about the price?

Basically when they are running business, we are able to manage our domains through their servers but if they went bankcrupt, who would take care of that

Price? When it's time for renewal, the price will change. That I can guarantee you!

If you're a client, you'll pay about $35.
If you're a partner/affiliate, you'll pay about $16.

I'm not too sure I understand your last question.

The admin of the domain will be assigned a new account number, username and password to manage said domain.

More to the point, why isn't it rubbish.

There are procedures mixed with loose undertakings that the community of ICANN accredited registrars agree to, and among those are what to do if a fellow registrar bites the dust...

There is no way on earth that you would lose ownership of your domain if your current registrar went out of business.. you would continue to own your domain and find that another registrar, possibly could be Verisign, but equally any other, would be the registrar of record..
