I was browsing eBay today looking for some computer equipment I'm intending to buy and stumbled across this host advertising: http://www.goohost.co.uk/.

All I could think was that I would not to be the owner of that company when google finds it. :-/

There is a fine edge to walk when dealing with large corporations trademarks and I have a feeling he crossed it.

But, you never know. Google may take a look at it and just ignore it.....

Yeah...I can see that causing a few problems unless the owners surname is "goo" lol

I like how they advertise unlimited bandwidth and yet say bandwidth is 8 pounds per GB in the terms of service.

there are always 'host' who makes surprises like this. This is a free world, so it is the freedom of consumers to decide if they believe in them:P

Of course, it is also the freedom of the 'goo' family to pursue any legal infringement on them. haha

It sound so GMAIL for the bandwidth usage. (infinity+1) so each extra GB for £8 haha. Maybe Gmail will follow suit and say paying £1m for each byte of data stored after infinity. haha

Terms and Conditions were a wee bit short there, I've never seen a corporate TOS that short. And I didn't find anything about indemnification or dispute venue. This'll be fun to watch.

Anyone care to predict when Google will notice this and start actions?

Well, considering I noticed it and posted it here the question would be how long before others notice it and post it and someone eventually reports it. ;)

It:laugh: s an interesting thought. :emlaugh:

I wonder if Google will get there before they go out of business. And seeing that they offer Telnet access in their T&C, maybe that won't be that long at all.

Who in their right mind would host with a "beta" hosting company offering totally impossible services? The only truly unlimited service I've ever seen is unlimited long distance, and that is with a single line, so there's only so much talking one person can do. A Web site, on the other hand, can service many people at one time, so it's nothing like LD service.

Do I totally misunderstand the consumer mindset about hosting? I'd rather host with a company offering reasonable service. I've always said that if I weren't in the hosting business, I'd use pair.com as they seem the most reasonable out there.

Take your average consumer that knows nothing about hosting and decides they want a website. A friend gave them a gmail account when it was in Beta and they use ICQ in it's continous betas (a friend got them hooked on that) so they don't realize a beta is truly a piece of software/service not fully ready for market.

Now, they see the google coloration and the google icon up in the address bar and they believe this is "owned" by google so they immediately signup thinking this must be like Gmail and is perfect for what they are looking for. And it can't be bad since Gmail wasn't bad.

Also, to add this person is pushing on Google. Google brings much of there new features to market in "Beta" positions and even puts "Beta" on the name. If you notice how the "Beta" was done it is the same format as the original Gmail Beta lettering.

Basically the person who owns that company is banking on people to associate his site with google.

That's probably what the prosecuting attorney will eventually get to tell a jury...
