That's a very interesting article. It is true that it is very difficult to get a short COM name anymore. Though there are still plenty of longer COM domains available. Here are two other trends that we have noticed recently:

INFO more popular than ORG - It used to be that the most common type of domain was COM, then NET, then ORG. But as of last year, people are registering more INFO than ORG. INFO slashed prices for the first year of registration, generating a lot of new domain registrations.

Huge surge in IDNs - As of the last few months we have seen a huge increase in the number of people registering international domain names (IDNs). Some of the popular languages are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian. There are still lots of good names in the IDN space. We suspect most of these people are speculators, since IDNs are not in common use on the internet yet, though most browsers support them.
