It seems like a lot of people who offer servers on Cogent bandwidth are offering Epik as a backup. What's the deal with Epik? Are they similar to Cogent in pricing?

I think their pricing is somewhat similar to cogent's, FYI they use level3 for most of their routes...

Epik isn't a teir1 provider they are more like a glorified regional backbone.

Yes Epik is very similar to cogent. A little more expensive. They mainly use Level3. Pricing is in the sub $100 range.

They have had several problems in the past.

similar to cogent, mostly using level3? wouldn't that put them more closer to yipes in terms of quality and pricing?

i would say that epik is better than cogent? ????

but, yeah..

I also think Epik would be better as leveel3 has more peering and better quality

from my cable connection, we're peered to level3 appearantly as that's my entrance into the US.

it's damn fast, which means for a large portion of europe, using one of the largest broadband providers in europe (chello), anything utilizing level3 is pretty speedy. level3, yipes (also peered mostly with level3), and epik are damn fast for me.

speed wise yes epik is faster then cogent. epik has more outages then cogent however. but all and all epik is not that horrible for the price. great for a backup connection
