So... 700MHz + 30% (210MHz) = 910MHz... (note that this is NOT an exact formula, but just an indicator) In that case you'd better go for the 1000Mhz one.. But... I don't think it's gonna be THAT different! KDAWebServices 05-16-2002, 09:07 AM I'd go for the Dual CPU, even if using the 30% rule it gives less mhz performance. The reason i'd go for Dual is that if a runaway process ties up the CPU then it will only tie one up, if you have two CPUs then you are ok, if you have one, then your only CPU is tied up with a runaway process. In my books dual is always preferable over single cpu. ZYE 05-16-2002, 09:31 AM very interesting - didn´t know that the gain is 30% for dual processors. so lets say i have a big mysql db - and do a search in it would the 1ghz be faster than the dual 700 ? any advantages also in serving requests per second - gain loss over dual vs single? thx for your info´s :D CRego3D 05-16-2002, 10:14 AM the gain is NOT 30% for the secodn proicessor, if at lest, 50% .. but from tests done in the past (with 3D renderign packages) you DO get 2 processed runnign at almost the same speed if it was one process in one single CPU apollo 05-16-2002, 10:19 AM depends on the OS as well. For example, Linux handles it better than FREEBSD... ZYE 05-16-2002, 11:16 AM would be redhat 7.2 Fartknocker 05-16-2002, 11:45 AM I've recently went from a 1000mhz machine to a dual 750mhz... and what a difference. I doubt you'll ever see me on a single one ever again. Of course, switching from VDI's datacenter to Rackspace might also be the reason my machine is A LOT faster. Add a scsi hard drive to a Dual CPU machine and you're on your way. |
