View Full Version : redemption period Q
AnmolTech 04-02-2006, 08:24 AM the domain i want on whois gave me the following info:
Creation Date: 29-Jan-2005
Expiration Date: 29-Jan-2006
Status:REDEMPTIONPERIOD
shouldnt the redemption period be over by now?
how much longer do i need to wait?
THanks
There's no guarantee that a name will automatically leave redemption, as sometimes they get "stuck". I had one with Network Solutions that was over a year overdue. Queries and complaints fell on deaf ears, and it was only by chance that it developed a lame nameserver and that kick started the process finally.
Contact the registrar and ask why it hasn't been released.

In my case with the dates i have mentioned above -- is it already overdue -- meaning by now it should have left redemption period.???
should i go ahead and backorder it with snapnames.com?
the domain i want is "somethingwebhosting.com" someone already has the name somethinghosting.com although they dont have the website yet. I suspect that the person is also waiting for the same domain as i am.
any suggestions would be helpful.
TIA
If it's with NS, then snapnames is the only one that has an inside track to getting it. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you're not first), they've gone with the auction model in which of there's more than one person interested, they auction it to the highest bidder. Saw one I liked recently that went for nearly $6K to a search portal site.
Should you snap it? If you want a chance at getting it, absolutely...but be prepared to pay more than you expect if anyone else is interested.

Stan Marsh 04-02-2006, 10:49 AM If you'll enter your domain into http://freewho.com/checker/ it'll give you prettty close estimate about the drop time.
Good luck!

A GREEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT link.
Thanks
it gives me a drop date.Since its not register thru network solutions or other partners of snapnames, what is the best way to get the domain on the day it expires( freewho does not give the exact time it will expire , just the date). ---please answer this quesiton.
Its registered with publicdomainregistry.com
4solutions 04-02-2006, 04:06 PM PublicDomainRegistry.com is Directi's new generic name.
Since Directi has been a preferred partner with SnapNames, There is a good chance that you may have first crack at it there before it goes into the PENDING DELETE phase.
Once it is in the PENDING DELETE phase, it goes back to the registry, where all registrars get a crack at registering it on the day when it drops. If it is a .com name it will be released on the day of the drop at 2pm New York time.
Good Luck! ;)

Right now the domain is in the "redemption period" and the "drop date" is April 15th.
So you are saying that somewhere in between is the "Pending delete"phase? ---.
DO you have an Idea how many days BEFORE the drop date the domain goes into the Pendeing delete phase?
i wonder if i can take a chance once it is "dropped" EXACTLY at 2 PM.
4solutions 04-02-2006, 04:39 PM So you are saying that somewhere in between is the "Pending delete"phase?Yes.
DO you have an Idea how many days BEFORE the drop date the domain goes into the Pendeing delete phase?Normally, the PENDING DELETE phase is 5 days long. In this period, the previous owner can no longer redeem the domain.
i wonder if i can take a chance once it is "dropped" EXACTLY at 2 PM.I wouldn't risk it. Most halfway decent webhosting domain names are highly sought after.
Dave Zan 04-02-2006, 05:57 PM Standard time frame for domains in redemption period is 30 days. So if the domain
name's last updated date said March 29, then the domain's in redemption for 30
days after that date.
During redemption period, the last registered owner has 1 last chance of getting it
back for it's rendered available for re-registration. The last registered owner will
surely pay a higher fee, kinda like a "penalty" fee for not renewing on time.
If not redeemed within that 30-day period, the domain name will switch to pending
delete, the point of no return (supposedly, anyway). Pending delete tells registrars
which names will become available soon.
So in this case, if the name's not redeemed, it's going to become available soon.
When that day comes, all hell breaks loose. :D
The best way to capture this domain would be...
1) Buy it from the original owner and pay the redemption fee on top of the purchase price to the current owner.
2) Place a bid at SnapNames as soon as you can (for any NetSol or Directi registered domain). If you are the only bidder when it drops then you get the domain immediately. If there is more than 1 bidder, there is a short 3 day auction. Bid more than anyone else.
3) Place bids at Pool/NameWinner/ClubDrop, as insurance against #2
4) Wait for it to drop from the register and then register the domain.
Ranked by order of probability. 4 being the lowest (>0<).

In between 3 and 4 should be backordering through Godaddy.

would you please elaborate on # 3 a little more -- please
thanks

Yes. I entirely agree guymacon. I actually considered putting it there, but I didn't feel like going into the long explanation about GoDaddy being a good choice in the most extremely unlikely event that the domain drops, a "taster" picks it up for 5 days and then let's it drop again. GoDaddy is probably the best at picking up those domains. They're probably almost useless at picking up a domain on the drop or extremely lucky in the unlikely event that they do so. But it's a possibility, so should have been included as being >0 :)
3) Place bids at Pool/NameWinner/ClubDrop, as insurance against #2

Sure. In the example given (NetSol or Directi), the registrar has the preferred auction partner of SnapNames. It is almost 100% certain that any domain that drops registered with them will end up with SnapNames. However, there have been some reports of some "leakage", where the preferred auction partner didn't get the domain (although I think that was mostly related with Enom/ClubDrop domains). So, as insurance against that unlikely event happening, you bid at all the remaining major players in the drop catching business. It does you no harm whatsoever to make those bids and it gets you to the table in the unlikely event that SnapNames doesn't get to auction the domain. Personally, I think it's such a slim chance, that you can leave this step out if you are not 100% serious to get this domain. It's just insurance.
For more background about backordering dropping domain names you should read the thread entitled "Backordering" under the Domain Name Tutorials section in this Forum.
