View Full Version : 1and1 domains
robert668 04-01-2006, 09:01 AM Hello guys,
I found 1and1 sell domains at a very cheap price ! 5.99$/yr for .com .net
Anyone with experience dealing with them?
Any potential costs?
But the setback is we can only create 5 subdomain.
Anyone knows where we can create unlimited subdomains?
A lot thanks!
Robert
jbwebhosting 04-01-2006, 10:25 AM Yeah, the price is nice, but the controlled 5 domains is just dumb. Why not offer unlimited and have the client allocate the space/bandwidth as they see fit?
technanny 04-01-2006, 05:17 PM Do they offer phone support? Are they Icann accredited? Do they publish their address on their site? These are just a few questions to ask yoursef.
4solutions 04-01-2006, 10:49 PM Well... 1and1 is primarily a hosting company. They register their domain names through ICANN accredited registrar Schlund + Partner Ag.
You have to realize that they lose money on every registration. So don't expect too much (if any) support if you don't sign up for hosting. Personally, I find their control panel to be cumbersome.
With that said, I still have one "test" domain there... and, no matter what negative things I may say, it still works!
Personally, I think it's worth a few extra dollars extra and going for say Domainsite.com or NameCheap or, even GoDaddy.
shiftchip 04-03-2006, 07:38 PM I have 4 domains with them and I currently am having no problems... they have slow suport but they make up for it (in my eyes) by giving free whois block.
softmind82 04-03-2006, 09:21 PM i registered few domains with 1and 1 but they are costing 8.99 pounds

In UK, yes. In US/Canada, it's USD5.99. However, I wouldn't trust them my important domains.

Bull...you really don't think they have a special deal with them for registration?
4solutions 04-04-2006, 02:07 PM Bull...you really don't think they have a special deal with them for registration? The wholesale cost for a .com domain from the registry (Verisign) is a minimum $6.00 plus a $0.25 ICANN fee for a total of $6.25 per .com domain name sold.
Forgeting about costs like servers, electricity, advertising, and customer support... please explain how 1and1 is making money off selling domain names at $5.99 when it costs them a minimum of $6.25 per domain name.
And I suppose they make a profit by selling .info names for FREE, too.
:erm:
labrocca 04-04-2006, 02:14 PM Yeah I know it's $6.25 but honestly...$26 cents is nothing to lose for each signup. I didn't say they were making money on domain sales. However your assertion that because they lose 26 cents per domain is a reason they can't be making money is ridiculous. The .info domains for free are also possibly a special deal as I believe the .info registry allows for any new .info to be freely registered.
I have a 1and1 account with few problems. I really have it for only 1 domain which is an image host and it takes huge bandwidth. The 1and1 deals are perfect for it. Their control panel is cumbersome to say the least.
Stan Marsh 04-04-2006, 02:20 PM The .info domains for free are also possibly a special deal as I believe the .info registry allows for any new .info to be freely registered.
'Freely' in this case does NOT mean 'for free'. As the matter of fact, Affilias (.info registry) *IS* having a special for the first year of registration, but it's not longer free as it used to be 2-3 or so years ago.
4solutions 04-04-2006, 03:18 PM ...However your assertion that because they lose 26 cents per domain is a reason they can't be making money is ridiculous...Please STOP misquoting me!
I said that they were primarily a hosting company and that they lose money on every registration.
Domain sales for 1and1 are just a loss leader to get people to sign-up for their hosting service. I simply said "don't expect too much (if any) support if you don't sign up for hosting."
Please stop putting words in my mouth. Obviously, if 1and1 was losing money overall, they would stop selling domain names for $5.99. This has been discussed here at length in other threads... with the cost for Adsense and Overture PPC ads, it makes perfect sense for a hosting company to sell domain names at a loss.
labrocca 04-04-2006, 04:13 PM Sorry about the misquote. I didn't get my coffee then and I was speed reading.
You don't have to get all upset about the issue...but anyways I agree with your assessmenet.

I thnk each registrar company is paying $1.25 each
webpromo 04-04-2006, 04:39 PM Keep in mind that once a host passes 5000 domain names under their belt, it is much easier to become an ICAAN approved registrar. Though they are making nothing on the domains, they are reducing the number of application (cost) for becoming ICANN approved.
tanda 04-04-2006, 04:52 PM 1and1 is ok, they do have great prices, and with free whois protection. I just found their dns updating to be really slow, especially compared to Godaddy where my dns updates are in few minutes, not an hour or two with 1and1. Not a problem is you don't change dns a lot, but I wanted to mention it.
