If you move from one provider to another, what happen to your customers regarding name servers? will they have to change their DNS records at their registrars, or do you have a trik?

Choppy 05-15-2002, 10:40 PM Well if you have your own name server with the reseller you use.. your customers would not have to upgrade anything. Because all you would have to do is change your IP address etc. but if you use annonymous nameserver and you must swap over all your domains! kind regards reisve 05-16-2002, 07:52 AM But if you move to another host, when you get your own name servers with the new host, wouldn't the IPs be diferent? Let's say you have ns.you.net xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with your old host. your clients have their domains pointing there. Now you move and get your name servers from the new host. You will have ns.you.net yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy Your clients were pointing to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Don't they have to change and point to yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy ? Techark 05-16-2002, 08:00 AM are pointed to you NAME servers not to the IP of your name servers. So if you move and change the IP numbers of your nameservers the DNS servers will resolve all your sites back to the correct IP numbers. Monte freakboy 05-16-2002, 01:56 PM Some registrars ask for your DNS host and IP numbers both (Network Solutions). I was confused about this as well. But, it will go by name, not IP, as stated above. Wazeh 05-16-2002, 03:12 PM The registrar keeps track of nameserver IPs. Once you change the IP at the registrar, all domains using your nameserver will automatically use the new nameserver IP. reisve 05-16-2002, 10:36 PM And Thanks for the info Website Rob 05-16-2002, 11:35 PM Don't forget, there will still be some propagation involved so warn your clients. Should only be a few hours though and no Email will be lost -- just delayed. reisve 05-17-2002, 06:51 AM Gues the tricl is to copy the sites to the new host, not to move, and delete them after the propagation is complete |
