i'm not sure if this is the right forum, but i'm willing to take my chances.
i'll give you the short version of a long, pathetic story--
a friend of mine is having her face, and her name dragged through the mud for something very silly. they are calling her names and defacing her image.
of course, i was going to go to their host, but it seems that they are hosting themselves, or at the very least a reseller.
i'm not sure what i should do, so i came here for help.
thanks in advance.

go to their upstream provider.
do a traceroute to their server. if they are hosting themselves, find out who their connection is provided by.
if they have a reseller account, you should be able to find out through the trace who the server belongs to.

Skylab hit the nail with the hammer. (The phrase goes something like that?)
Most hosts will not tolerate this from any client. If their web host wont take care of the situation, try and see if you can find out what ISP they use. Their ISP will also take care of the problem.
Of course, if all else fails get a lawyer.
Good luck, and keep us updated on how this ends up please.

IANAL (I am not a lawyer) but, I am pre-law...
As long as they are stating their commemts as facts, not opionions...
Such as "She is"
That qualifies as the civil tort of libel.
Sounds like (if you can figure out who they are) you could have a fun little civil suit against the offender.
String 'em to the wall.

Studio64, i too am a political science/pre-law major, however im pretty sure that in order for it to be libel, the information about "She" has to be false.
If it is, like you said, string em to the wall.
If the bashing is true then, it really isnt bashing...

As they also teach you in law:
There is two sides to every story.
We are getting a small part of one without facts.

Yes the days are long gone when you can freely express your opinion about something/someone without them running off to their lawyer. We all should have been lawyers.
