It is illegal to have copyrighted videos and music files such as music videos and songs, from Coldplay to Johnny Cash.

Depends on who it is. If it's a signed artist, you need to get permission.

absolutely right. if someone used your work without you knowing about it you would expect the same wouldn't you?

all commercial music needs a proper licence to broadcast it, radio stations pay royalties on everything they play and it would be the same for you.

on the other hand if the music/video was owned by you, you wouldn't need your own permission!

Any broadcast of the music videos without proper rights or licensing is illegal. If the videos are in some other server than either they have paid for the rights or else even they are doing it without permissions. So in both the cases you are liable to be prosecuted

at the end of the day, this are stupid rules which does not help the artist at all!

so many artists who have contracts with X company, are crying every day because the record company does not promote enough. so all this copyrights are for the benefit of a few people who own and run BMI, ASCAP, RIAA, Sound Exchange and SESAC

It's still illegal, but a lot of people put them up on youtube anyway.

I'm surprised youtube hasn't been knocked on this one yet since there are loads of music videos on there there have been put there without permission.

2. I'm a video artist and web designer and I would object to anyone using my work without permission
3. Can you tell me how many artists would agree to anyone using their work and getting no compensation for it? This argument is just invalid. It is the law. Either follow the law or risk the consequences or request that the law be changed.
