Piano 05-15-2002, 06:49 PM I think it may just be that. (I looked up some info on the museum.)
9onlinehost 05-15-2002, 09:02 PM I belive thats the red square in russia
richy 05-15-2002, 09:30 PM i remember a very similar picture in france but it had a recently added glass pyramid fountain. if the pics an old one then it could be one of the palaces in paris, been a few years since ive been there tho.
creid 05-15-2002, 10:06 PM yeah,
looks like it would be from somewhere in france....
Chris

I agree with AcuNett, it appears to be the Louvre Museum.
benoire 05-15-2002, 11:57 PM That's not the Louvre.
MarcD 05-16-2002, 12:04 AM im pretty sure its red square in moscow
AcuNett 05-16-2002, 12:05 AM Cmon any francais's? Benoir seems to be one ;). Au revoir!
Looks like spain to me!
had to put my 2 cents in
:)
NetXL 05-16-2002, 08:43 AM It looks like a nice place.
Could be converted into a nice datacenter.
What do they need all that space for anyway  :D
hardweb 05-16-2002, 08:45 AM I am sure it's not louve or moscow red square. But I think that's in Vienna. I will ask my wife if she remember the place :) We've been in almost all countries in Europe and I am quite sure that's Vienna.
redjackryan 05-16-2002, 09:22 AM I believe it is the Palace at Marsellies <sp> its definately french architecture
Chicken 05-16-2002, 09:44 AM Well, I can't tell you where it is, but I can tell you that it isn't Red Square (which isn't a square area created by a building like this).
FiberOptic 05-16-2002, 01:25 PM Please S T O P posting pictures of my garden... will ya?
IceBlaZe 05-16-2002, 02:09 PM It's certainly not the red square, it's the louvre, no doubt about it.
ChillyBob 05-16-2002, 02:13 PM Nope, it isn't the Louvre, i've been there and it has two glass pyramids in the middle of it with escalaters inside going underground to the museum. Sorry no idea where it is
ADEhost 05-16-2002, 02:29 PM I believe ( and looking it up right now because I have an old painting of it ) it is in spain, built before 1683 - 1686 ( the time of my painting )
I do not know if it's madrid or barcelona, Also note, You are seeing 4 sides to the square (plaza), the plaza is boxed in, that along is not common in europe till after the 1650.
Mike
update it's not the plaza mayor in madrid ( that one is colored redish )
XTStrike 05-16-2002, 03:32 PM did anyone stop to ask "why" this person needs to know where it is ?? lol :)

But I don't think there is a place actually called "the Palace at Marseille," while there are a couple of palaces in the area -- but I don't think any look like the place in the picture. The style looks similar to that of the Palace of Versailles, but that it isn't.
Hardweb might be on the right track; it looks something like one of the many "squares" in Vienna -- but I couldn't say that it is any of them. And really that style of architecture is seen throughout Western Europe. So my bottom line: I have no idea. But absolutely not the Louvre... even dismissing that the pyramids are missing, the detail on the building is different.

doesn't look like anywhere in vienna to me. at least not anywhere i've been to. possibly the interior of rathaus, but, i doubt it.
my vote would be on france or spain. that style architecture IS very common throughout western europe however..

Nope, its not the Louvre :) Like others have said, the Louvre has two glass pyramids in the middle. Also, there are no arches like the photo has in the foreground.
It's not the Palace of Versailles either, its completely different.
It's definitely European architecture, my money's on Spain or southern France.
AcuNett 05-16-2002, 04:20 PM Well keep in mind the pyramids at the louvre were only built recently. This may be an 18th century picture or so.

Not even that old. I don't think the glass pyramid access to the museum was added more than two decades ago...
benoire 05-16-2002, 04:45 PM Even so, the arches aren't right, and the road isn't there :) Also the Louvre is a bit wider.
Gadgy 05-16-2002, 05:30 PM It is the Town Hall of Salamanca, Spain, located at the "plaza mayor".
It was done by Adrés García de Quiñones
Yes/No?
:D

richy 05-16-2002, 07:20 PM Brick lane markets , london maybe?
VoxKeysGtr 05-16-2002, 07:36 PM More than likely the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca, Spain. If not, then it's some other city in Spain. :)
Update: I went back and looked at some photos from a trip to Spain, and it does indeed appear to be the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca. It is identical. :D

It does look like it could be the same place. The detail on the top of the main part of the building (a smaller spire and two statues on each side of a structure housing three bells), the stones on the plaza floor, etc...

there ya go brick lane, i know its the posher area of london so many of you wont get to see it, but the similarity is plain to see. couldnt be anywhere else.

The photos of Salamanca's Plaza Mayor look pretty convincing to me, though there could be other examples of the same design.
richy 05-16-2002, 09:53 PM lol that was irony. personally i think its down to france or spain (altho i didnt know there were eu subsidies back then ;)). the catalan architechture is close, but its a bit less white and a bit more umm curly? the french style was a bit closer. but thats subjective of course. it still screams french palace to me. the styles are very similar but the french went for a cleaner look. the original doesnt have the inward tiering present in catalan designs, but my eyes might be failing me. dont have enough knowledge of vienna to comment.
edit :
versailles, looks closer to me but not the exact match

rockergrrl 06-04-2002, 10:37 AM Yes, it is Plaza Mayor. I've been there myself.
I should've looked in this thread sooner... there would've have been any inkling of Red Square (wha?) or anything like that. ;)

Not intending to start an argument but, I was under the assumption that Daguerre invented photography with his process called Dageurreotype's in 1837. And those photos were extremely grainy and usually of very horrible exposure. Color photography was invented by James Clerk Maxwell in 1861 by combining 3 photos taken through 3 different colored filters then projected back again through the same filters but, the projections combined...
