Hello,

I would like to know if it would be a good idea to have the following setup at Rackshack:

I currently already have a server at Rackshack... I have had no problems at all with them so far, so I must be one of the lucky ones. But, the time has come that I must expand, since the server is too heavy loaded...

Currently, the database server is very high heated, so I am thinking of getting a seperated database server... however, it would be a waste ifI would have to pay transfer for it, wouldn't it ;)

Anyway, I was thinking of an additional server, that is not connected to the internet. Instead of connecting it to the internet, place an eth1 interface on the first server we rent now, and put a crosslinked UTP cable between them. That way those 2 servers are really close to each other (low ping) , and can have unmetered free transfer...

However, I am not sure about two things - does Rackshack do these kind of things, and is it recommended to do this at their place?

Thanks in advance,

Leon Mergen

I am not a Rack Shack customer, but the rest of the posts on this site suggest that Rack Shack service and performance leaves much to be desired. They give web hosting a bad name, and I would be very wary of singing up with a hosting service for which (1) there is significant anecdotal evidence that they suck and (2) there is a lack of evidence that they've addressed any concerns.

Bottom line: you get what you pay for, and I would guess that you could find a better provider -- there many to choose from

Also, Leon, I'm confused why you've posted the query to the forumn, rather than asking a Rack Shack sales person. You are a customer, no? Perhaps you wanted to see what others think of it first? But your question is regarding their capabilities, so it would seem logical to ask them...

You should do some more research Logical. Keep in mind there are around 5500 servers at rackshack, you only see a couple of them complaining here.

Blazenet, they do not even allow colo so I doubt it.

I am not from rackshack so I can't represent them. But I don't think rackshack can accommodate you with this setup. You may want to try rackspace, I know they specifically sell a private net connection. As for rackshack, if you have looked at their datacenter picture, you can imagine that your old server is one of the many already jammed on the rack. I don't think they will have the free time to move the machine for you.

I also don't see why you can' just get another server. Are your database server going to do over 400GB of database transfer?

Yeah that will be $899.99 setup and 139.99 monthly :D

Well, if you're executing about 10 million database queries each day, all of about an average of 1kb, that will mean about 10GB of database queries each day...

Which will be 300GB datatransfer / month... so I guess it will be a better option to just get a private network ;)

And yes, I have seen Rackspace, but man, they're expensive... ;)

BlazeNet, that would work if it could be done. Rackshack don't do things such as that as it requires custom work and so it costs more. They keep their costs down by providing set services which basically run automatically, you pay for server you get server, that's the basic gist of it. Anything else would cost a lot for Rackshack, so they can't do it.
