Man I am ticked... Thank god my credit card number has changed.

Register.com has recently sent me a few Emails stating that They were unable to charge my credit card for renewal of a domain.

Umm I didnt want to renew the Domain.... Since when did they start this practice. Its always been if I didnt want to renew it then i didnt renew it... Now we dont have a choice?

Well Guess thats why I am not using them anymore.

Yes, Register.com auto-charged my credit card $35 to renew a domain name that I wanted to expire. If you log into their site, you can reverse the charge. I was pretty pissed off, too. Luckily the reversal process was easy, so I forgave them. If I administered hundreds of domain names, it might be a different story, though. :pimp:

Dotster also auto-renews now. You can log into the control panel there and uncheck the feature. I don't remember being told about it, so a lot of others might not either. If you plan on letting a few domains go this year it might be worth everyone checking with their registrar. Seems to be common practise now

Yeah, I accidentally re-registered a couple of names with Dotster because of this... generally it's a useful timesaver, though. I just wish they had notified their customers about it.

I got e-mail from register.com that they were implementing this practice. So they are making a good faith effort to let people know...

I never got this Email.....

Got a few more Emails though on them trying to get me to renew the domain though..... 3 at a time to each Email address I have registered with them.

I didn't know about it either, and five domains that I no longer wanted were auto-renewed. But in fairness, Dotster was very quick in reversing the charges once I emailed them.

I found this out the hard way last year, luckily my card # had changed and the domain was eventually transferred.

I have never gotten an e-mail, from Register.com or Dotster, about this policy It truely is extremely aggravating.

I will have to check Dotster...I don't want any company auto-charging anything without my authorization.

Register.com is not the up front company they once appeared to be. I know for a FACT that I unchecked and unauthorized auto renew with register.com...but this didn't stop them from telling me they were about to do so. I stopped them, transferred the one site we keep active to Dotster and then was told by Dotster that R.com had managed to slip the renewal in on r.com's books so that they got the credit (and I paid extra).

This is not on the up and up;25 years of business experience says otherwise.
But thanks for the heads-up on Dotster. I'll check it out.
