I want to get a dedicated server and move a dozen web sites to it and then build 200 more. If I purchase a managed server will I get unlimited IP addresses? Do I need unlimited IP addresses to do this? I just noticed:

I just went to RACKFAST and you get this for $199 per month and $199 set up fee.

RackFast Managed Select - RHE1
1.26GHz P-III Intel Processor
256MB ECC RAM
40GB E-IDE HD
50GB Bandwidth
5 IP Addresses
RedHat Linux
Additional Bandwidth Pricing

1-100 gb - $2.75/gb
100-300 gb - $2.00/gb
300-1000 gb - $1.80/gb

Where it says you get 5 IP addresses? This is the first time I noticed this. what gives with IP addresses and leasing your first managed server?
Thanks,
Bradley

Greetings:

(opinion only) You should ask the provider instead of asking here; they would know better about there offering.

With that stated, different providers have different offerings.

Also, more and more companies are switching to name-based hosting where you do not need to have one IP address per site.

IP addresses are only needed for name servers, secure sites, VPN, and other specialty needs. Meaning, if they are doing regular hosting and do not need a digital ID / secure site, then they most likely do not need their own IP address.

Bradley, you can most likely stick all the 200 odd sites on one IP address, as dynamicnet said you only require additional IP addresses for the things listed above.

With 5 IP addresses... if you are providing web hosting packages to customers, then one IP address would be the server IP which can also be used for name-based accounts (customer's websites), two other IPs will be used for name servers and one other once can be used for a shared SSL certificate and the last IP is just spare (??).
