I was asking my self if there is a marketing strategy behind the price? .. 9.49$, 9.79$, 9.85, 9.96$, 9.97$ ..etc
I have take i look in the super market and they like the x.49$, or x.97$ any one know if there is a psychedelic reason for that?
I know that super market do not sell hosting plan but maybe the sell strategy could be the same?
Just curious.

Thanks

Psychological, not psychadelic.

9.95 looks cheaper than 9.99. 9.99 looks much cheaper than 10.00.

AFAIK that's really all the reason prices have these odd numbers.

As mentioned correctly above, it is purely a marketing tactic (for the same reasons mentioned above), nothing more.

Actually I worked retail for a long time and there is a logic behind it. The idea of 9.99$ looks more appealing than 10$ even. The other numbers .98 .97 and .96 usually have meaning within the company, such as a discontinued item, or clearance item. It is a way for the employees to quickly look at a price and know if they can special order more for a customer or not.

The dollar sign goes BEFORE the numbers. Like: $9.99, etc.

Yes, it really is a marketing strategy...

One of my customer pointed out once that my prices looks expensive as I am charging $7.00 instead of $6.99 :).... And odd pricing theory really works.

Blessed.

I'm curious about fuse9's pricing plans. For example the plan I have with them is $9.77 and has 1777 MB of space.

The number 7 is real easy on the eye. Statistics show that the majority people who are asked to choose a number between 1 and 10 will choose 7. Almost anyone who is asked, "What is your favorite number?" will answer 7, simply because that is the first number they can think of. I don't know anyone who actually has a favorite number. Similar statistics show that numbers towards the begining of a number line are the second most chosen numbers, and numbers at the very end of a number line, are hardly ever chosen. Broaden the number line to 100, and 77 creates a bigger impulse than 99. Simple logic.

I like jmcallister's post, found it interesting and didn't know that stores did that.

This is actually pretty true. Most larger marketing firms will charge 197, 97, 147 etc for programs and stuff. Even the discounts make the final price something with 7 at the end.

You realize it isn't that way everywhere (and in fact, in historical English writers, the sign was often reversed)?

I'd be willing to bet, if you went to a country where the sign was put on the other end, it would be relatively easy to put it in front. Hopefully you don't get attacked for it.

It is just a marketing gimic..but it works...thats all that really matters.

However, I know someone who owned a very nice second hand store, and she always had even prices $10, $5, $2, etc. One day she decided to change her prices because of that exact idea...and her sales dropped by over 70% the first week...so she quickly changed them back and sales went right back up, she tried it a couple months later and the same thing happened. So I guess there are certain situations where it might not apply..lol..but for 99.99% of business I'm pretty sure it's a good marketing idea. I aways found it interesting.

Lets not forget about how appealing a 7% discount with a paid year of service would be... :P

I've seen a lot of companies do something like "Ony XX per week!!" -- That looks kind of interesting :)
