View Full Version : Apple's new rack-mount server
Carlos 05-14-2002, 08:18 PM Just wanted to hear comments on Apple's new server (http://www.apple.com/xserve/) The prices are of course high, but the machines do look really, really nice.

thewitt 05-14-2002, 08:32 PM These are unbelievable, screaming machines.
They run circles around comparable priced Intel hardware in all the benchmarks I've seen so far.
If you have a need to deliver streaming media, there is absolutely no configuration that can compare.
Apple is responding to the market who have demanded this hardware - driven today by people who buy off the shelf servers and canibalize them to make them rack mountable.
I don't know that they fit into the $100 a month dedicated Linux server market, but for high end users they are the bomb!
For whatever reason, there will be a rash of Windoze users who feel threatened by this machine and will post "bash-it" posts, but the fact is these things are dynamite!

Carlos 05-14-2002, 08:51 PM Yes, I don't think they were made for the $99 a month hosting people, but for that need streaming applications, music production (i.e. ProTools, stage shows), scientific community, rendering farms, then they look really nice.
I can imagine that Pixar (Steve's other company) will buy many. ;)
For those of you who are wondering, "Yes, you can get your MySQL, Apache, PHP, etc on Mac OS X. " :D
Cheers,
Carlos

I've used G4/OSX servers before, and when it comes to streaming video, they kick butt!

That's because it's Unix. :D
Finally, the Mac has been rehabilitated.

They're not high when you compare them to similar X86 based servers.
$3000.00 is, for once(for an Apple product(and yes I own 2 Macs)) extreamly competitive.
It would make a wicked web server, but it's not made for small-time hosting.
I think the whole thing is designed around streaming video though, especially when combined with the 1.46TB(I think) 3U rackmount RAID device that's coming out from Apple by the end of this year :D.
