View Full Version : Good expierence with RackFast
adamh 05-14-2002, 06:12 PM Just wanted to let everyone know about a newer provider out there that kicks ass...
I run a consulting company, as well as have a niche product that receives aton of traffic seasonaly.. I was running into b/w problems with my last host, and neededto switch. Based on price and b/wavailability I chose rackfast... I have 2 managed front end servers and 4 dedicated image servers under my powers.
They have no prob'srebooting a machine a 2am, something that my last provider mademe pay out the a** for. Also availability is incredible. _very_ fast.
Anyway I now host all my clients out of one machine, and my product on the other 5. I am about 12mbit constant, and sh*t flies.
Anyway, if anyone wants more detailed info, shoot mea note. adam@pobox.com
I am not affil. with RF, I just want them to build up their client base to ensure they stay around! Bad times in this economy.
Good luck to you all.
Adam

marksy 05-15-2002, 05:12 PM Why not just post your site here adam, or some more info about your machines.
Logical109 05-15-2002, 05:30 PM I'm not impressed by this company (RackFast) which I've never heard of, and I am dubious of the author's authenticity.
I am less impressed by their usage of IDE for storage, which is inferior to SCSI. Hey, you get what you pay for -- and this company seems cheap to me. If price is how they are going to attract customers, rthaer than quality, their doomed.

Am I wrong, or did they just launch Monday?
If so, I'm just curious why you needed to call in for a reboot already (unless you're just saying they'd be ok with that sort of thing).
HRBrendan 05-15-2002, 05:47 PM Adam has been a customer since pre-lanuch - an original inquiry through HostRocket and beta tester of our RackFast services. If he wants to disclose his site details with you im sure he will, however I'm not going to do it for him. I'd appreciate it if you guys wouldnt jump all over any of our customers who come to view/post on these boards. We recommend these boards to our customers because they are a valuable resource for webmasters not to get them yelled at for mentioning us.
As for our use of IDE storage, I think that every dedicated server company in the world probably offers IDE storage as an option on their servers as for many types of content it is perfectly suitable. All of our servers also come with SCSI as an option, many of them come with SCSI as the only option. Rackspace, whom was also brought up in the thread, is the leader in managed dedicated servers industry and they as well offer dedicated solutions with IDE drives.

adamh 05-15-2002, 06:35 PM Well Well. I feel like I'm at a LUG meeting or something, and I'm MS! hehe.
Anyway, my machines are a mix of IDE and SCSI.
The image cacheing machines run SCSI drives for speed.
For storage, a cheap RAID10 setup is fine. Is fast enough for most applications, and when its not I will cache it to the SCSI.
I don't have the cash to pay RF or anyone for all scsi drives. You gotta make do and be creative.
If someone wants to do an analysis of my machines etc, as I posted in the above message, I said to EMAIL ME AT ADAM AT POBOX.COM. I am not going to disclose my sites publically at this time.
You do get what you pay for. RF is very compettive in the market place. No, its not the same level of service as say a managed service at EXODUS. But EXODUS is very expensive.
I've been with many hosts. I've been in this biz for quite some time. I've ran my own racks, own hardware. I've had my own bandwidth. Outsourcing it just makes sense.
RF _is_ a good choice. There are other good choices as well.
I needed to call in for a reboot on a machine that I f'd up with a daemon I'm writing to handle some backend work with an offsite database. (A 'global' type connection pooling method for PHP/Apache) But I've also been up there for a few weeks. I was one of the first customers I believe.
Anyway, email me with questions. Talk to RF.

marksy 05-15-2002, 09:27 PM The whole thing just seems out-of-sorts, just post your sites, why use a virtually anonymous email acct adam? Geez, if you can't see how people might wonder about a post like this then I'd like you to visit a great host called netfronts.com, I have a couple sites there, write me at imnotnetfronts@consultant.com. That's exactly how this sounds...could be a perfectly great praise post but the cloak-and-dagger on a product line that requires 4 servers is bit shifty sounding.

How did you hear about a company that didn't even exist until a few days ago? Seems odd you would contact a shared hosting provider to colo 6 boxes and use 12 Megs.
Also, you brag about your company and all that traffic, yet you won't tell who it is? Come on. Why brag but not show?
No offense Brandon, but way to use your betas and the boards to push your new launch. :D
Sorry, but I agree, this thread seems fishy. But good luck with your new venture anyway. It is a nice site.
adamh 05-15-2002, 09:47 PM As I said, email me and I will talk with you in private.
There are reasons I'm not posting them publically, and it is because my service isnt a public one.
It is a product that is paid for by clients in a niche industry, and I have contracts that state I will not publically disclose their sites or information.
If you want an email address of a machine hosted at RF, email me @ adam@kentromedia.com
As that is my consulting company.
Thanks and have a great day! ;)
Aussie Bob 05-16-2002, 01:24 AM How cynical we have all become hey?? ;)

As Brendan said, it was an inquiry through HostRocket that got Adam set up as a RackFast customer.

If you take a look here, http://hostrocket.com/home/index.htm , you will see that HostRocket offered dedicated servers. Thats how he found out about RackFast :-D
