View Full Version : can they do this?
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 02:46 PM I signed up with cable internet with my isp on oct 1999. Its been a long time. Been with them ever since, still to this day.
ive been paying like $42.95/mo
Today i get this email
As a result of rising costs over the past five years, and to ensure a reliable Internet service with equitable costs for all customers, it has become necessary to increase the monthly rate for Cogeco High Speed Internet to $44.95 effective June 15, 2002. Please note that the rate increase was effective January 1, 2002 for all new customers and we are now adjusting our current customers’ rates accordingly. Due to cost savings through bulk agreements, bundled packages with Internet will not be affected.
I didnt think they could do that?
wth??
I mean, i didnt konw u could just go raising prices when u please?
btw i live in canada. the reason why im kind of fuzzy on this is because its been so long, i hardly remember anything =/
DanielP 05-14-2002, 02:53 PM Yup, read your origional contract with them, I bet the price for your service was only guaranteed for like a year or so.. It sucks but it happens :(
Avail 05-14-2002, 03:33 PM Same thing happened to my DSL service. I talked with a lawyer friend of mine about it, he said everything they did was perfectly legal.
okihost 05-14-2002, 04:47 PM Thats life.. I get the same crap from the TV cable people atleast once a year. They choose to break it down in like 4 .50 cent increases than just whack me for 2 bucks once a year.. Thats life and the way big company's are run.. I mean it usually happens with companys that there is no competition.. Like for example.. I have Cox Communcations for my cable.. if I dont use them well then I go with no cable.

TopDog07 05-14-2002, 05:18 PM $2 price jump, that is outrageous.
Maybe you should go back to dialup since it is so expensive with the raised price :stickout
BrianF 05-14-2002, 05:31 PM $45 is cheap for high-speed, depending on the quality of service.
I pay $59.95 for 768/384...granted it's the only service I can get, but I'm still happy :-)
TopDog07 05-14-2002, 06:33 PM You are lucky Brian, only thing available in my area is dial up. :) Phone lines will only allow connections no greater then 34.6kbps
:( Since I pay for two seperate lines and the dial up access, broadband, even if it was $60 per month would be cheaper. :stickout

Wanna here something sad. I just moved to the boonies a couple of months ago... At home.. The lines will not allow anything over 24000bps! I had no clue when I moved out here that it would be like this.. I guess this is what happens when you move from the big city out to the country trying to get some peice and quiet. Out of luck my office which is less than 4 miles from my house I can get cable modem..
Wow. I'm assuming those are all prices in US dollars? I'm in Canada, on cable, and I pay $40 Canadian (about $25 US). And I pay an additional $10 Cdn for my wife's computer (connected to a hub) so that we are both able to be online at the same time.

One of the first things I investigate when deciding to move is "What High Speed Internet Service is Available?"
Without Cable Modem or DSL, I wouldn't consider moving there!
My first modem was a 1200bps and then I upgraded to a 2400bps, Years later came the 9600bps modems. I've suffered way too long
Here in Cincinnati, Ohio....... AOL Time Warner increased my Road Runner to $44.95 month. Yep, I was pissed.... That was a $5 increase. Take it or leave it..... Big companies don't care about you!
My 2 cents
In Maryland, Comcast charges $44.95 - $54.95 plus $5/month for modem rental. I think I'll be on dial-up for a very long time :bawling:

coight 05-14-2002, 10:29 PM Well in Australia our friend telstra.com has raised the prices 3 times on dsl/cable in 8 months. I think it has gone up something like 40% over 8 months.
AussieHosts 05-15-2002, 12:14 AM It's not always the price they adjust either is it Robert. :)
They changed their dialup in the last round as well.
Cheers
