what do you guys advise as far as the payments to hosts etc...?
how do u all go about it with your hosting companies?
after my past experiences, I am a bit reluctant to give my money away with no prospect of getting it back after the first 30 days.
I am also getting the impression that switching hosts for some forum members is almost as commun as changing underwear, which is a bit scary....
what are your thaughts?

I would go with monthly... you never know what may happen with your host or website. But if you are considering a longer billing cycle because of price incentives (less for longer commitment) then I would probably make that choice after being with the host for about 6 months or longer, after getting a feel for how the host conducts themselves with support, reliability, etc.

If you wonder how a particular host can offer SO much space and SO many features for SO little money, consider that perhaps they cannot -- for long.

If you want stability, don't be too averse to paying a fair price for it -- if you want to cut corners, you build in additional risk.

Same goes for long-term payments: you're taking an increased risk in return for saving a little money.

What I used to do with webhosts was start off paying monthly and then if I liked the service, I'd switch to a yearly plan. Most hosts will let you switch.

Well even as a host we advise paying monthly. There's a lot of things that can crop up for customers from both the host end as well as their own. An extreme example is another host I know who's customer went and died on him a few months into a yearly hosting fee.

We have customers who pay 3,6, and 12 month accounts, but for the most part it's monthly. They're happy, and we're happy.

A very wise idea :)
