View Full Version : Rackshack's XP1900 1GB / 60GB 7200
Erich 05-14-2002, 11:37 AM What's everyone's opinion on that deal? I already got one. It says 1 GB GB RAM on the front page although on the order form it's just 512, but I assume I got 1 GB RAM.
Is this box good for 200k visitors with 2-2.5 Mio hits a day?
That would be 200k pageviews with a little php in each (but no MySQL) and each pageview causes about 10-13 hits, plus mod_rewrite and htaccess?
spelling
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:03 PM Did your server come with 1gig of ram?
tell me
if you don't know
login the server
and type
cat /proc/meminfo
paste it
anyway
i called rackshack, i asked them, "If i bought the amd athlon xp 1900 would it come with 1gig of ram or just 512"
they told me that they didnt know.....???????????????
i said well let me talk to someone who does konw
he told me "actually nobody konws, they kind of snuck that in there on us unexpectedly"
he said that they were told that it only came with 512mb of ram, but now it says an extra 512, he never knew abou tthat
WHO HERE bought that server and got 1gig??
i just ordered one
if they said on the frontpage we get an extra 512 FREE, i want my 512 simple as that.
ill be getting the login details soon, hopefully it has 1gig.

clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:21 PM nah
chill
erich, type
free -m
and then copy and paste everything.
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:21 PM it looks like 1gig is *IN* there
but just its not showing on redhat
once i had aproblem where a box had 2gigs of ram, but only 1gig was showing
because the kernel would only use that much
had to recompile kernel
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:30 PM now RS says for sure 1gig will be what you get
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:36 PM erich

I got it instantly, I think I was the first or second to order
It's plain Redhat 7.2, at least supposed to be

clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:39 PM ya
see
in your dmesg
it says
Warning only 896MB will be used.
so i believe that there is 1gig in there, the box just isnt compiled for it
you'd have to recompile to be able to use 1 full gig
Erich 05-14-2002, 12:41 PM hah
great :o
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:41 PM erich
check your private message.
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:42 PM and back to your original post
yes this type of serv would be just fine for what you are doing.
Erich 05-14-2002, 12:49 PM so... are all servers like this?
should I ask rackshack to either replace or recompile it?
Could I recompile it remotely? Damn I already got the other one where I have to (want to) remove ensim now this...
Headsurfer, if you read this, how about taking both (this 896 MB one and the Pot Luck Ensim from yesterday) back and giving me 2 x of these XP1900, both ready with 1GB, and I just pay the difference (199+99-(1+119))?
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 12:54 PM nah
with rackshack it's what you see is what you get
no breaks
its all robotic
anyway, rackshack might do support like recompile kernel, i am not sure. they said they arent sure right now, they will konw for sure later..?
Doug from RS said: they only offer network and hardware support.
and yes you can recompile remotely, from your house, or wherever you are right now, however it is risky.
If you mess up, your server might not come back online.
so you recompile, reboot and pray it works.
Erich 05-14-2002, 01:02 PM hmmmm I want them to do it then. After all I paid 199 setup and it says 1 GB. I'll email headsurfer and see what he says.
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 01:02 PM open a trouble ticket
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 01:02 PM come on irc dude
or go to their chat or whatever
irc.ev1.net or goto their chat
Patrick-EV1 05-14-2002, 01:26 PM If you submit a TT it will be fixed.
Erich 05-14-2002, 01:48 PM I submitted a ticket now
Erich 05-14-2002, 03:12 PM It's been resolved (recompiled I assume) and the server shows 1 GB now
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 07:01 PM hmm..... i just got the amd athlon xp server... and it seems to have some compiling issues. anything i compile. i get
somethign like this:
In file included from alias.c:2232:
expr2.c: In function `zzlex':
expr2.c:1583: Internal error: Segmentation fault.
Please submit a full bug report.
See <URL:http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/> for instructions.
gmake[1]: *** [alias.o] Error 1
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/home/dev/BitchX/source'
make: *** [BitchX] Error 2
seg fault everywhere
it seems as though gcc is broken on these servers? i just got it..
i had problems compiling openssh too...... and ive compiled openssh over a dozen times problem free
even on the potluck.
it was fine
everythign that i compile is a seg fault.
anyone else have this problem?
erich how about you?
try compiling something.
Erich 05-14-2002, 07:11 PM Uhhh, I rather don't experiment as long as everything seems to be o.k., cuz I am not as experienced as you. I need to get it running tomorrow, I will install webmin, setup a few domains and start pushing the hell out of my little 4 server cluster immediately and start making back the bling bling I spent. It's about time already.
Thanks for your help in the 896 MB issue
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 07:15 PM Dude, what is wrong with you?
What if somethign is wrong with the server, you are going to have to face it eventually
Just do this (As root):
cd /tmp
wget ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/OpenSSH/portable/openssh-3.1p1.tar.gz
then when it's done downloading
type
tar xzvf openssh*
then cd openssh*
./configure --with-md5-passwords --with-tcp-wrappers
then type make
and if it crashes, or stops, or something like that, then something is wrong with YOURS too.. and YOU need to get it fixed.
Note: the instructions/steps i gave you were only a test. that will NOT Install anything. i repeat, it will not install anything. and anyone on this forum can verify that.
You shouldnt have an atittude like that..
I just want to see, becuase you have the same box as I do.
If it goes through, and no errors, then fine. cool, just tell me.
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 07:16 PM i think it might be a memory issue.
Erich 05-14-2002, 07:27 PM ah well before you beat me up... hold on
ToastyX 05-14-2002, 07:31 PM Sounds like even more cases of RackShack selling defective servers. You'd think they'd bother to test the servers before selling them. This is happening way too often.
...and clocker1996 is right. It's better to find out if there's a problem before you start using it. The instructions he gave will only compile OpenSSH. It won't install it, so you won't have to worry about breaking anything.
Erich 05-14-2002, 07:34 PM seems that it worked, I got pages over pages of messages and am at the prompt again now
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 07:53 PM they are going to do a ram test, and see whats up.
i think the ram is bad.
they compiled openssh 5 times on my serv and it died once
1/5
so that tells ya something.
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 07:54 PM erich
alright
you can type
cd /tmp
rm -rf openssh*
if you want
and go on with your business
Erich 05-14-2002, 07:57 PM clocker, while I do that could you help me with this one
how many files (jpeg, average size 50 kb) do you think could such a server (XP 1900, 1 GB RAM) serve max. per day or sec.?
Assumed there was no 10 MBit cap but 100 MBit? This is obviously not for the rackshack offer...
I think 1 Million such files a day for sure but how about 3, 5 or 10 Million a day? It could serve 30 files or so per second at decent speed?
I am trying to evaluate what portion of a 100 MBit line I could satisfy with static 50 kb files with one such server, how many hits it could serve
clocker1996 05-14-2002, 08:23 PM no idea dude
dont wanna keep you in suspense
<CasoN> um
<CasoN> My rackshack can do 1600K/s
<CasoN> that's 32 files a second
<CasoN> that's 1920 files a minute
<CasoN> 115,200 per hour
maxbear 05-14-2002, 11:16 PM I got the same problem of my new XP1900.

web_res 05-14-2002, 11:31 PM For some reason they decided to swap your ram... Hopefully because it was defective...
Or they might be misreading a software isssue... I have no clue what's going on with these new amd servers.

clocker1996 05-15-2002, 02:24 PM yea
ram stick was bad in my machine
they swaped it now
everything is good now
:)

if anyone got the amd athlon xp 1900 maybe you should check what processor you have
i find this very weird.
cat /proc/cpuinfo
erich how about you?
clocker1996 05-15-2002, 03:01 PM i guess in the bios it was set to athlon 1200+
thanks to patrick its fixed now
but people should always check when they buy servers what exactly the hardware specs is :)
you could be using a 8 gig hd when u bought a 40 gig
ToastyX 05-15-2002, 03:05 PM Looks like the model name is wrong too. It should display:
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1900+
web_res 05-15-2002, 03:17 PM This is unbelievable.... I supported RS's decision to use XP's only if they were extremely careful with all components (MB's, RAM, Fan, etc.)...
I don't see any indication that they were even slightly careful.
Of course, I'm just one of 5k + server owners that happen's to visit their forum.
Erich 05-15-2002, 07:07 PM mine says Athlon XP 1900+

clocker1996 05-15-2002, 09:07 PM see
glad you checked
send in a trouble ticket
when you do, tell them you bought an amd athlon xp 1900, andthey swapped your ram, but your processor speed says 1194mhz
also tell them that in the BIOS its set to athlon 1200+
tell them to change it to athlon 1900+
tell them to change it to what its suppose to be..
maxbear 05-15-2002, 09:18 PM Hi clocker1996,
How can i check the cpu info for BIOS? Why command should I type?
May be we should most a message at RS forum to let everyone know about this.
clocker1996 05-15-2002, 10:09 PM no..
they have to locally go in the bios and change it
it was probably a mistake.
uclaboyz 05-16-2002, 03:29 AM hi clocker,
how do I finish installing openSSH?
thanks,
Steven
Patrick-EV1 05-16-2002, 10:17 AM Problems such as this should be submitted in a trouble ticket and will be fixed quickly.
