I am finally making the move away from CPanel after years of dealing with their buggy software and horrrible interface. I know there are some conversion scripts to bring customers onto the new servers, but anyone out there have any tips or gotchas I should know about?

I will be doing these one by one to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. The biggest thing will be moving the primary DNS server I believe.

Ouch. Good luck! Please be sure to post back here and let us know how it goes. We've been thinking about this off and on... but I honestly believe DA has just as many "gotcha's" as cpanel.

I doubt any CP has as many bugs or undocumented changes as Cpanel. It is overpriced and instead of fixing base problems in it they keep trying to pack new features in to blind the customers of its core issues.

make sure to inform your customers about the moving, then you will be fine. We have moved 20+ servers without trouble :)

Such as? :)

Yea I am usually over informative if I can be. We have gotten almost a 100% feedback of cheers to do this move. Customers think the Cpanel interface is more confusing and has more junk in it than you need.

The cPanel source / programming is a joke.

DirectAdmin is much better, and much more reliable.

Don't know, since we don't use it.. but in my years of experience of using various control panels (both commercial and private), I have never seen one that is "perfect" or bug free.

A quick look at the DA forums shows there are various bugs and problems with DA, too.

I always urge caution when switching from one product to another, simply to "escape" the bugs. Sure, the grass is always greener, etc.. and sometimes it really is... but sometimes it just appears that way until you start digging. And then you might wish you had stayed with your old house, because at least then you knew what were the bugs, and how to work around them.

So why not use a different skin, especially one that easily allows you to hide unwanted icons/links, etc. (Like rvskin)

if you dont know, dont need to say DA buggy :) From my experiences, DA is much more stable than cPanel, less errors, of course. I am not sure what you have seen at the DA forums, that you call bugs :)

Every software has mistake, but for DA, when there is a mistake found, there is always a method to fix it. And the DA staff is working hard to make their product more stable. Thanks John.
I am sure that I had to reload OS several times before, just because the bandwidth calculation bug in cPanel. You can search on cPanel forums, and see several ways to fix it, but they are not always good enough :( in cPanel, one mistake can be fixed already, but it can happen again in future release. I dont know why :|

I must say that I admire the way DirectAdmin manage their releases - mostly once a month with planned features and bugfixes. It would be nice to see some of the bigger goals outlined.

That still doesn't address the random bugs in CPanel, undocumented changes or the base overhead issues CPanel has from installation.

If you do a search on the da forums you can find a nice conversion script from cpanel to Directadmin. Good luck :)

Anyone know of a script that can do the reverse?

Check the cpanel forums. I have never seen anything like that.

Any further information on this would be appreciated so we can address said issues. As for the undocumented changes, the changelog (http://changelog.cpanel.net) is available, and although right now it may be a bit unreliable, it's being improved.

Regarding the random bugs, these are being resolved on a daily basis, if there's any outstanding ones in particular, don't hesitate to drop me an email.
