I am looking at getting a low end server from fdcservers and was wondering if anyone has had any experiences with them. I would be using it mainly to host just one site for now as a learning experience for server admin. If anyone has experience with them please let me know.

Thank you,
Mark

hi there,

i got a server with them ... the $99/month ...

i am new to linux system too .. basically i dont have any knowledge with linux ... (i am more into windows platform)

so far the server has hang around 3 times in two weeks coz of my fault;-))

speed is quite fast for my first website.

the response times is quite ok (normally they replied in the morning singapore time = -8 GMT time)

looks to me they are handled by 1-2 persons.

the good things, he told me that i could mess up the servers anytime i want ... and they will re-install the OS when it is needed (free of charge) and no contract.

overall ... i think they are above average

Thankyou for your help. I think I will be getting one of their servers to practice on today or tomorrow.

Hey!

I got a server four weeks ago from Petr at fdcservers.net (aka Kingcomp) to use as a backup mail and DNS machine.

They've been bashed around a bit in these forums, but if you take their offer for what it is -- a single-homed Cogent connection provided by a small business -- then you're not setting yourself up for disappointment.

They have good rates for an interesting and flexible set of services. I've found Petr to be helpful and I've had no network problems.

This isn't a paid promo -- I'm just hoping to bring a bit of balance to the fdcservers / Kingcomp discussions.

Oh, and have fun with your new server, Mark!

Hey areabiznet,

Let us know how the low-end server is when you get it! I am interested in how much of a load that it will be able to handle.

Discussions on ICQ with Petr says it can probably handle around 600 GB/month. I'm just worried about CPU overload. I was gonna buy a low-end server to test their services and then see if I can try their other plans.

I've had a server with fdcservers for about a month now and I have been happy so far. All I am using it for is to serve out videos for a few sites of mine, but it seems to do that just fine pushing out over 50gigs/day with loads never over .03.

Check out my mrtg graphs at: http://66.28.166.41/traffic/index.html

You will see that I have been pushing an average 10Mb/s with a max at 17.2Mb/s. Not bad at all for $99 a month. :stickout I am looking to get a few servers with them down the road.

JayPee said it right with They've been bashed around a bit in these forums, but if you take their offer for what it is -- a single-homed Cogent connection provided by a small business -- then you're not setting yourself up for disappointment.

and I agree 100%. :-)

They probably get bashed around a bit because they offer "unlimited bundwitch."

They don't offer unlimited bandwidth.. they offer unmetered.

I agree with rastoma on that one...there is a difference. I know exactly what I am getting, I pay for my server to be hooked up to a shared 100Mbit port and I am free to push as much as I want/can through it. This is far different than a company claiming "Unlimited Bandwith" and then hiding that you only get 1gig/month of transfer in their TOS or they will cancel you. ;)

Just my $.02

I just my server (a custom one, if you're wondering) from fdcservers.net. So far, my experiences have been all right. First off, he installed the wrong operating system. Then, he installed the right operating system but the processor kept overheating. Petr said he'll replace it the next day and he did. Now I am running fine and I am getting ready to test it's load in the following days.

I am happy right now.. seems to be a pretty good deal.

Thank you all for all your help. I will be ordering a server tomorrow. I will let you all know how it goes but it will be tough in the beginning because this will be my first. I use a reseller account now so I don't have to really do any server admin. This is just a test so that eventually I can move my customers to my own server.

he needs to update his main page as it does say "unlimited transfers & unlimited bundwitch".

Been with fdc for 4 months now. It's been an enjoyable experience so far, hope it stays that way. I've had one or 2 technical problems (never with the server, but had some issues with their network hardware). All problems were dealt with swiftly and professionally, which for me just goes to proove they've worth the money. Don't think I've seen many people say this about Rack youknowwho shack :D

I've got a server with fdc as well, got it about 3 weeks ago when my server with another 'cost-effective' provider went down for a week....

I was lucky enough to order the server in a hurry, get some addons, and have it up and running within an hour an a half of talking to Petr on icq and ordering.

I have had a couple of hiccups, but nothing serious, and it seems to be smooth sailing now..... had some VERY fast transfers, as well as some ordinary ones now and then....

from oz, I get some excellent traces.... as low as 300ms from my 56k connection (any higher is usually due to load on a local ISP's router)

so for less than $100, any of their servers are fan-bloody-tastic value!

Well, I just got home and checked my e-mail and had the one from Petr saying that it is ready. Looks good so far. Now the fun begins.

So far everything is going great. I had some questions in the begining and Petr was very helpful and all my questions were answered very quickly. (within 5 to 10 minutes!) I would most strongly recommend them to anyone that is in need of a dedicated server. I can see that my relationship with fdcservers will be a long and prosperous one.

1) What server and plan did you get?

2) Any upgrades?

3) Do you have a bandwidth tracker installed? Since I can't afford the FAST plan, I don't get one installed from them, but I would like one anyway

Thanks for the update,

jt

I got the low cost one with 128MB upgrade. It is on the slow connection, but for now, that is all I need for practice. I have not installed a bandwidth tracker yet but I plan to in the future. (as soon as I find one that is free and figure out how to install it) This is mainly to get my feet wet for now. I am not going to host any real accounts on it (I will have some that I can play with to get used to administering it). Right now I just resell my hosting accounts through some one else to real customers. The low cost plan is cheap (50.00) so that I can mess up and not lose any customers. I am still in the beginnig stage of learning how to operate a server but hopefully I will be able to become good at it and then I will move my customers to the dedicated server.

How much bandwidth exactly is "unmetered"? Even if it's a lot, I need to know a more exact amount. Anyone know?

"Unmetered" by itself doesn't mean any specific amount -- you could have an unmetered 64kbps line or an unmetered 1000mbps line, or whatever. Since we're talking ethernet speeds here, a 10mbps port gives you a theoretical maximum of about 3200GB per month, and a 100mb port gives you about ten times that (32000GB). I've pushed about 600GB per month from my box at KingComp, and I know some other WHT people with servers there have done quite a bit more than that. You're not very likely to get the theoretical maximum since you're sharing bandwidth with other people (their highest-priced plan puts ten servers per 100mb/s connection, so you could expect to be able to consistently push 10mb/s from that one). If their bandwidth were dedicated it would be a lot easier to give a specific number, but since it's all shared it's hard to tell -- your best bet is to just see what some of their other customers are getting.

I too picked up one of the FDCSERVERS.NET low end dedicated servers to host a couple of small sites I have.

I got my server lastnight, so I'm still configuring a number of things on the server, but so far everything has gone extrememly well.

Petr, has been great, answering questions quickly and providing complete answers to my questions.

I prepaid for the server for an entire year so Petr gave me some really nice upgrades (no setup fee, 40 gig hard drive, and 512 meg ram). Since he was out of servers and I had to wait a couple of days (untill the shipment came in) Petr upgraded the HD again to 60 gig.

So far my experience with FDCSERVERS.NET has been fantastic. At this point I would definitely recommend them.
I'll keep you posted once I get everything configured.

I had 1 server with Petr since February which was able to transfer about 1500 GB/mo. and now I got 10 more. Seems to me upgrades take a bit of time (waiting for all 11 servers to be upgraded to 512 MB of RAM for the past few days), but generally he is OK.

I was able to test the speed of cold reboot - took about 30 minutes after I send an e-mail at 4 a.m. in the morning of Chicago time.
