There are times you get what you pay for ;-) Thank you. My personal definition includes custom partitioning, kernel upgrades, securing the server, installing additional modules and so on. All these are not included on a Rackspace server, they even charge for installation of modules. Granted, this is normal for a dedicated server, but I expect much more in a more expensive managed server! dynamicnet 05-14-2002, 04:27 PM Greetings Walter: "I wonder why so many people believe that Rackspace provides managed servers. However, I would like to point out that in the market rackspace.com services, their pricing is very competitive for what they offer to their clients. They have a 99.999% network up time guarantee. Most of the providers I've seen are lucky to have 99.9%. That 0.099% makes a gigantic difference in quality of service. If it is up... Then it is down... per year 90% - 876 hours 95% - 438 hours 99% - 87 hours, 36 minutes 99.9% - 8 hours, 45 minutes, 36 seconds 99.99% - 52 minutes, 33.6 seconds 99.999% - 5 minutes, 15.36 seconds 99.9999% - 31.68 seconds Furthermore, how many companies offer a hardware repair / replacement guarantee? Lastly, Rackspace.com does work with partners who do provide those services you mentioned. Yes, those services are not included in the price of the server. However, most partners or Rackspace (if asked) can work out a bundle deal for you. Thank you. RackMy.com 05-14-2002, 05:02 PM What is a managed server? There are managed hosts that do offer those types of managed services which are included in the monthly price (we do). FatBobo 05-14-2002, 05:29 PM Rackspace has the best geeks in the business - but lately their management has gone to hell. They pushed very hard to get to long-term profitablilty, which is good and smart for them, but in the process they screwed some of their customers. One day I got a new acount manager and it seemed his purpose in life was to try to sqeeze extra money out of me. Recently we we were down for 14 HOURS (which I believe blows through 99.999% uptime) they did not give me any concessions. Very poor style. Walter 05-15-2002, 06:50 AM dynamicnet, I was fully aware of their features and they are a reputable company, I just wouldn't call their service "managed". That's all. |
