....... Oh my gawd......

I'm still shaking. This reminded me of the Northridge earthquake in 94... This one was an 5.2 earthquake in bay area.... epicenter close to Gilroy. Hope there was not injuries or damages.

It lasted what felt like a whole minute but it was probably a few good 10 seconds.

*sigh*

Wow, I keep missing them. A couple of weeks ago when there was an earthquake in northern NY, but apparently felt down here in the metro NYC area, I was in Florida for the weekend. I was in San Francisco this past weekend, but came back last night.

I guess that's good, always staying one step ahead of the quakes...

JayC,

everytime you travelling somewhere, just give the US Geological Survey a call and tell em where you are and where you will be heading. :D

Matt mentioned that in ICQ before he logged off, and I didn't catch it. He's right down there. Yeah, Earthquakes aren't too fun. I recall being asleep on Thanksgiving morning and I was in a studio with a cement floor (i.e., felt everything), and you talk about a rude awakening. We don't get Earthquakes up here very often at (In mid-Northern California, in this part anyway), and this was about a 5.2 or so as well. Very eerie feeling, indeed. We had like 70-something aftershocks that were about 2.5 to 4.5 each over the next couple of days and about 200 over the next couple of weeks. It's weird hearing it coming, when the runbling of the Earth just comes barrelling your way after feeling a strong one. Definitely nerve rattling!

People in San Francisco should be fine since it isn't close to the epicenter. The epicenter was located in Gilroy a few miles South of San Jose. So far I haven't heard of any casualties. I worry about those with a heart condition and the eldertly though .......

Some news (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=533&ncid=718&e=8&u=/ap/20020514/ap_on_re_us/san_francisco_quake_21) about the subject by the Associated Press.

As for the effect of a quake in that area affecting San Francisco, remember that in 1989 the epicenter was also south of San Jose. But a plot of the Mercalli intensity ratings, as opposed the Richter measurement of magnitude, showed that the saturated soil in the area amplified the shaking effects and carried a Mercalli rating of 9 far from the epicenter to the area of San Francisco and Oakland. So presumably this one, even at 5.2, might have had a similar, though much lesser, effect.
