Looks like I'm stalking you, doesn't it davezan?

Anyway, your thread title suggests negativity. No?

What's the significance of this move by GoDaddy? Good or bad?

No matter which one they choose, I just hope they thoroughly test the system before putting it into production. Stability is the most important thing as I look at it.

GoDaddy might get a big check for this switch. Hope the end-users like this move though

I do not know one from the other. I am sure Godaddy has done their investigation prior to making such a move

Your dreaming davezan. It's a nightmare ;)

It used to be you never got fired for buying IBM. Seems like MS has taken over that mantle from IBM along with their markets ;)

"security-enhanced, highly scalable and easy to manage" has never mapped to the Windows platform before, and I don't think it's gonna happen any time soon. Someone fell for the FUD.

Isn't this only concerning parked domains with GD?

What is all the noise about? Is one that much better than the other?

"It was clear from all of the testing we've conducted that Microsoft provides an efficient and scalable operating platform, while also providing the performance needed to handle our extraordinary growth."

Sound like they swallowed the marketing line, hook, line and sinker. Notice there was nothing mentioned about being "the most scaleable" or "the best performance".

Microsoft says its Solution for Windows-based Hosting provides GoDaddy with a technology platform that is security-enhanced, highly scalable and easy to manage.

They would say that. They're trying to sell you something. Still notice nothing about "the best" or "easiest to manage". No mention of uptime, reboots, resource requirements, support requirements.

Read between the lines... "security enhanced" means we got a problem with security and we're working on it continually, using you as the guinea-pigs, and we've still got a long way to go to catch up with our competition. We take security seriously. Expect copious security updates from us as you report even more security flaws to us ;)

I'm not an expert in the field of server os's. I post only because of my jaundiced view of marketing hype and what I believe to be true from expert opinions I've read over time. I thought I read recently that MS's share of the installed base of server os's has gone down. Can anyone confirm that?

I'm sure there are more credible experts than me. But I'd NEVER host my domains on a Windows server (although I don't ever want to attempt it). How to do a simple 301 redirect for example?

I don't know how a company that size can make a mistake like that. ;)

I'm sure they have considered their options. Who said it was a mistake?

Almost everyone here thinks it ;)

Well, I've asked the experts in WHT Web Hosting Forums. You can follow that thread "GoDaddy goes Windows" there, if you want to know what they think :)

It's a few days early for April Fools jokes, so what does everyone think of this?

GoDaddy is starting to really expand, and grow out alot huh. Seems to me that GD has grown at an expectional rate, with new features, and new products. Truly amazing! :)

So is Windows a more secure, more expandable, more easy to manage platform than Unix/Linux? :)

I don't know about that. One thing I do know for sure is that the Windows server longhorn TCP/IP Stack was re-written and is quite fast! I mean really fast!

Very true. MS will do anything to keep themselves on the top ;)

If I was microsoft and GoDaddy was considering switching to my Operating System for their entire operations I would offer them a very nice deal as well, wouldn't you?

What's with all the Windows hate here anyways? I love my linux machines as much as the next guy, but I see quite a bit of "Anti-Windows" without any real justifications.

my_other_identity
03-26-2006, 04:46 AM
This might be a sweeping generalization but most that hate Windows have no real use for Windows. Otherwise they would not be so hateful :)

Windows 2003 is a good OS, the Vista server promises to be an even better OS based on what I've seen so far. MS is definitely trying to patch up their mistakes IMO. I also think that there is room for both Linux and Windows.

Oh no, I am not anti-MS or anti-Windows. I love my Windows thought my programming is usually Linux based ;)

i think this is a good move, as for security reasons.

i prefer windows than linux, but i am currently hosted under linux.

But this wont affect the current GoDaddy's Linux Servers would it ? Defintely not the dedicated - how can they possibly move from Linux to Windows just like that ?
For example PHP's gobal variable, $_SERVER is returned my Apache - this will fail in IIS. So how the hek can they possibly change to Windows from Linux ?

markjut
03-26-2006, 10:04 AM
So are they going all windows or are they keeping some linux servers?

anjanesh
03-26-2006, 10:12 AM
They should stick to moving from one version of Windows to another later version of Widnows - not from Linux to Windows !

So are they going all windows or are they keeping some linux servers?

I think the announcement mentioned they were moving to becoming a Windows based host. Personally, I think it's borderline wreckless. But it won't matter for most noobs. They'll think it has to be like that for the price.

I thinks microsoft gave them all kinds of cash to move over to windows.

One year from now, we can see how things went and how it affected Go Daddy and their customers. Until then, everything is just speculation.

It does seem like a pretty controversial move, though. Maybe they know something we don't.

03-28-2006, 11:26 AM
Maybe they somethin about linux that we do not?

Beebadeeba
03-28-2006, 02:15 PM
Well, it's good enough to make Microsoft panic and heavily discount their own product, but we knew that already.
