Hi all,

I am currently using a Dell 10K RPM SCSI Hard Drive dedicated server. I would like to change to a Compaq DL320 dedicated server with 7200RPM HD. Both of them use Pentium III 1GHz and 1 GB ram.

I would like to know will there a big differences between these 2? Most of the traffic of this server is image galleries. All pages are static and most image range from 15K to 100k.

Any comments are welcome. Thanks.

How much traffic? With W2K, most objects are loaded in memory so the HD speed is not as important.

Thanks rackmy.

Oh the traffic is pretty huge. The total traffic for the server is around 700GB per month. And the number of visits per day is ranged from 50000 visitors to 100000 visitors per day.

By the way, it's on Linux.

Sorry, can help with Linux :). For what it is worth, a W2K box would load it all into memory as that's not much of a load.

Sorry I could not help more.

Unless you are going the cheap route skip the IDE choice. You will be much happier with the SCSI when it comes down to performance.

A nice couple dozen heads on a fat scsi can't be beat for performance.

My workstations here all run 10,000 rpm Ultra 160 Quantum drives and they kill the IDE's I have here.

If you want performance go SCSI

A complete image gallery as he stated? Wow, didn't know W2K is such good! ;)

The main difference between the ide and scsi drives is not so much the speed of the drives themselves, but the technology involved.
IDE uses a certain portion of the cpu to move data. SCSI, on the other hand, does not. So you not only get the faster drive and data transfer speed, you also free up the cpu for other tasks.

SCSI better than IDE in all ways (but not in price). When you're getting file(s) from the server with IDE it loads server for 100%. When it is SCSI than it don't load.
Did you keep SCSI in your hands? Try it and you'll feel..
I love SCSI.

Thanks for you all you guys comment.

Yeah, I have server with SISC and a server with IDE. I plan to cancel the server of SISC and order one more server for IDE, becasue the cost is cheaper.

The SISC can handle the traffic without problem, but I really can't sure if it happen if I change to a IDE server.
