Hi,

I am new to the web hosting and reselling business and have been spending a lot of time reading the posts here at WHT, trying to learn as much as I can about the reseller business etc.

First, a little background: I am a solutions architect / new media evangelist, with over 17 years experience at IBM, Lotus, Sybase, Lockheed Sanders, MIT Lincoln Labs, and others. After hours, I am a musician/composer/artist/photographer etc...

I am currently working on a business plan for a business and technology consultancy and solutions provider. The purpose of my business will be to help small to medium sized business clients, (hopefully mostly in my local community) to successfully deploy technology that delivers explicit, high-value business outcomes.

This business will allow me to combine my after hours artistic/creative/marketing skills with the developer and IS skills I have acquired over the past 15 years in the software development industry.

During the course of my marketing research etc. I have decided that it makes sense that I become a web hosting reseller and add this service to my offerings. This would make me a "one stop" turn key total solution for my clients, who in most cases have very little experience with computers and the Internet beyond simple word processing and business accounting software packages.

Since I am experienced with Application servers, Programming in C++, Java, Java script, Pearl, CGI, etc... I would like to be able to leverage these services in my offerings as well.

I believe that Linux is the most reliable platform for hosting, as well as being much cheaper than Windows 2000 etc., but I cannot seem to find any web hosting companies that offer Cold Fusion or IBM Websphere on Linux. Is there a reason for this trend or have I just overlooked some great companies that offer Linux servers with these application servers running on them? Websphere and Cold Fusion have both been released to run on Red Hat Linux and based on past experience they appear to work very well on this platform.

Initially I am not looking to do a high volume business but rather a reliable, high quality, application rich, service oriented, value add for my clients. It needs to be profitable enough to at least break even and not become a liability to the rest of my business.

Also, I will be trying out some on-line business models that provide streaming audio and video. So I am looking for a hosting company that has a solid backbone connection with good sustained volume throughput.

Any advice above and beyond what I have asked for above is also appreciated. I am grateful to have found this community of experts and professionals here in this wonderful forum, ready to help newcomers like me.

All the best,

Daniel
