View Full Version : Dedicated vs Managed
jaswinder_rana 03-20-2006, 02:04 PM Hi,
What is the difference in these 2?
I am planning to get one server to host my websites (which will grow in number, so its good to have my own server).
Not sure what is the difference and which one i should go with.
Please clarify for me
thanks
gavin-l33thost 03-20-2006, 02:12 PM managed and dedicated are sorta the same thing but
Dedicated is where you can look after the server yourself they just plug it in
Maneged is where they will babysit you and check its ok once or twice a week
jaswinder_rana 03-20-2006, 02:14 PM As i am starting, and have no intensive knowledge abou tthis field,
which option, do you think, will be best suited for me?
I'll ask about a host in other forum, but i need to be clear which will work best for me.
thanks
gavin-l33thost 03-20-2006, 02:23 PM Well it depends if they offer it for free take it if it is say 20$ a month or so dont get it
If you are using CPANEL is it really easy to see what is going on all u gotta do is use TOP in ssh an check the Server Usage
Also every now and then in ssh run W and see if theres anyone logged in shell and take a look at what there doing
Its really quite Easy
jaswinder_rana 03-20-2006, 02:34 PM ah ok.
So, you mean managed will be good for me??

Really? It's just that easy?
Jeez.. I wonder what I'm paying my $65,000 USD server admin for.
-----------------
To answer the original poster's question, if you don't know anything (or think you know a bit but are not sure, then you don't!), and want to run a high quality server that isn't subject to security problems, and the many many "issues" that pop up when running a hosting server...
... then I recommend a FULLY managed server. (ie: Something like this from HTTPme.com (http://httpme.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19514) )
If you are an expert admin, then you wouldn't need to ask the question of what is "managed".. so I won't bother recommending an unmanaged server for you.
(The assumption I'm making is that you want a HIGHLY RELIABLE server, and not just a hobby hosting company, etc..)
You can also consider getting an unmanaged server, and then hiring an "outside" admin to take care of it.. but for you, I'd recommend getting the server and admin from the same place since it will make it a single contact point and easier for you to "start out" in the industry. After you learn more, you will be able to more easily evaluate your many many options.
Good luck!
jaswinder_rana 03-20-2006, 02:58 PM thanks mrzippy
That prett ymuch explains it.
Yes i do have some knowledge but not sure about it. and yes, i twouldn't be a hobby server.
I am taking a course for networking and from next semester on we'll learn to manage Linux and apache (and otheres windows server 2003, novell).
So, after that i'll have a firm grip on what is going on. But, you are right, i think i should go for managed one right now.
Thanks for your suggestions everybody.
Though i still would like anybody to post a few more points which will clear me more about it.
BTW, i am now looking for a managed host and i did post here (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=497072). please sugest a good name.
thanks
jaswinder_rana 03-20-2006, 04:44 PM Also, should i be looking for Intel or AMD.
I dont have much interaction with AMDs in the past, so not sure how good server with AMD chipset are?
would you please suggest on this?
mrzippy 03-20-2006, 04:45 PM As I suggested, www.httpme.com is great for fully managed servers.
I also suggest www.axishost.com, for both managed and unmanaged servers. It's owned by "AH-Tina" here on these forums, who used to run affordablehost.com. She knows her stuff and can help you out.
grandad 03-20-2006, 04:51 PM Dedicated server = a complete server dedicated to you - you may be on your own with it or you may have an option for assistance if needed, either x hours free or chargeable per hour.
Managed server = a dedicated server that is completely managed by the suppliers support section to ensure latest security upgrades, patches, admin etc.
markjut 03-20-2006, 05:52 PM Kind of the same thing, a managed server is a dedicated but it is managed by the hosts support section etc
hc-eddie 03-21-2006, 02:05 AM If you dont know what your doing i'd go with the managed! It might cost a little bit more though.

I agree with eddie. Even if you do know how to manage a server, pay someone else to manage the technical side of the business so that you have enough time to deal with the business side. If you're trying to be technical-slash-support-slash-marketing-slash-business guy, you'll get burn out in no time.
I mean, another $20/month won't hurt your business, would it?
jaswinder_rana 03-22-2006, 06:09 PM What, do you think, is the average cost for managed server /month?
It doesn't have to be exact, but average.
I just want to calculate my expenses.
