Hi

I have been thinking about this for a while now. After searching 100s of hosts and reading reviews, I am yet to find what I need.

I have been hosting my site on my own server from home for the last 3-4 years. I thought commercial server would offer better resources but the cost of that is becoming considerable, especially as I do not make any money from my sites.

I don't want to deal a a reseller. Getting space from a reseller adds extra communication layers ie issues will have to be communicated with the reseller, reseller have to communicate them to the host, host to the reseller and reseller to the client.

That can complicate the process, especially when it is hard enough to sort things out directly with the host.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

My Requirements
-----------------------

No restriction on installing my own software whatsoever
No reseller
Linux/Unix server
5+ GB Disk Space
I only use 300 MB at the moment but maybe in future
20+ GB Monthly Transfer/Bandwidth
I only use 5 GB at the moment but maybe in future
Add on domains: Ability to have 5+ Domains on one account, sharing the same physical space on the server as they share resources
I only have 3 at the moment but maybe in future

Sub-domains: Ability to have 100+ sub-domains
I only have 2 at the moment but maybe in future

No requirements to move my domains to them
I don't wish to lose my domains if things didn't work out
FTP accounts for admin/users
Access to Raw error/server logs
No restriction on (legal) content
Regular (daily) Automatic backups included
24/7 Phone support
PHP not in safe mode
.htacess
SSI
Detail Statistics

Not Needed
----------------

Web building Software
Pre-installed software (Chat, BBS, Gallery, etc)
I use my own scripts
Email features (Mailbox, Forwarding, Auto responders, Auto-responder, Catch-all E-mail Addresses, Spam Filter, Virus Scanner)
I already have them with the domain registrar
FrontPageŽ Server Extensions
AZbb does not use a database so I have no immediate use for the databases but would like to have them in case

You may get access to CGI-BIN where you can place your exe files. But I am not sure many hosts will allow you to install custome software which require root access for a shared hosting account.

Good Luck in your search !!!

All other features you mentioned are there in bluehost. And since bluehost allow SSH access, you may email them with yr requirement.

Thank you for your reply john551.

BY custom script I mean PHP BBS script.

You may ask, why and isn't that obvious that everyone should be able to install their own script!!??
I have to say that one customer service representative said that I can not install AZbb and I need to get a VPS for that.

It was rather strange, so I mentioned the requirement just in case. It is noted in the original request (above link)

Therefore, root access is not required.

;)

PS. I am not able to edit the first post, therefore for an up-to-date requirements, please refer to: Looking for host (http://www.azbb.org/azbb.php?1142700071)

You need a dedicated server not a share hosting account. Shared hosting does not give you access to install software where ever you want. You only allows you to install software under your user and not under root.

With a shared account you might not be able to install whatever you want, you might need a server for that

Whoa, wait a minute...did you say hosting from your home???

Here's me, I have a little website, not live yet, and I'm looking for a host by following the sage advice found on WHReviews to surf the discussions. I'm seeing a lot of stuff about reselling and a bunch of domains, and all I have is one domain and one website that I want people to see. To start out, this site will be visited by the members of the organization it represents only, but I hope it will find more interest in the larger world. It is rather jpeg heavy, though, so transfer speed would be good.

I've been hunting for a site that offers about 100 Mb space and about 20 Gb bandwidth that is reliable and I can pay on a monthly basis. I hope to need to grow, though, and eventually to need a secure site (SSH?) and ecommerce and all that. I've built my site on my own with Dreamweaver (huge learning curve -- it's taken months!), and I upgraded to Windows XP so I would have IIS. I have a little database on Access also, and chose ASP.NET for the format.

So, with that setup and what I need, do I have the capability to host my little website from my house using IIS, is that how it works? Can I send the members of this organization the URL of the site and they can access it without signing up with a shared host?

You can host your own server. You would need a Static IP (possible with dynamic but not really worth it), Domain registration and DNS (Done with registrar, possible without but then your site will have to be accessed via IP), and good connection speed.

That set up may suit you but that is not the same as a commercial set up.

I am not familiar with IIS but if you want, I have written a guide for Apache & PHP.

Good luck

<P>Thanks AZbb, I've got all of that -- I just don't have the know-how.&nbsp; I'll hunt for info on IIS and hooking up my site, but while I'm at it, can you tell me why Apache/PHP rather than IIS?&nbsp; Am I painting myself into a hole with IIS/ASP.NET?</P>
<P>Thanks again...</P>
